Everyone wants to say how big of a mistake this deal was for the Tigers, giving a 32 year old Catcher a four year contract, which by the way, only two years are guaranteed, because statistically Catchers tend to start to decline around this age, but we don't know, maybe Pudge will be the exception, true he was poor in the second half last year, but came alive in the post-season, when it really mattered, but i think he will surprise a lot of people, look at Benito Santiago, he has had a career resurgance after turning 35, Carlton Fisk had some great years after turning 35, and people want to count Rodriguez out at 32, yes health has been an issue the past few seasons, but i'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, and show that he is still a great Catcher in this league.

Re: Pudge signs
Well they didn't have to overpay as much as the Oriols did for Javy Lopez. This is obviously a good sign by Detroit as they are making serious strides to turn the team around.Comment

Re: Pudge signs
If you look at the contract, the Tigers really made a great deal. No signing bonus, some deferred money, and injury out-clause.
Here are the details:
* 2004: $7 million, of which $2 million is deferred
* 2005: $8 million
* 2006: $11 million, of which $3 million is deferred
* 2007: $11 million, of which $3 million is deferred
* 2008: (club option) $13 million, of which $3 million is deferred
Buyout clause
* If 2008 option is not exercised, Rodriguez would get $3 million buyout.
Injury termination
* If Rodriguez is on disabled list for 35 or more days in 2004 or 2005 because of a lumbar spine injury, club may terminate contract after 2005 season by paying $5 million.
* If Rodriguez is on disabled list for 35 or more days in 2006 because of a lumbar spine injury, club may terminate contract after 2006 season by paying $4 million.
Deferred payments
* Deferred money accrues interest at 1 percent annually. Depending on length of contract, money is paid up to 2012.
No-trade clause
* Rodriguez may not be traded without his permission.
Award bonuses
Most Valuable Player: $500,000
Second MVP: $1 million
MVP voting second-fifth: $200,000
