If someone hits successfully for more than 56 straight games across two consecutive seasons, would that be the new record? Or would breaking the Dimaggio record require a player to hit successfully in 57 straight games in one season?

Hitting streak is a hitting streak. Jimmy Rollins' was over 2 years awhile back.

DiMaggio has the record because he passed a guy that had a 45-game hitting streak over 2 seasons.

If you look at the rest of the season, I believe he got a hit in 16 of 17 games after that. So he had a hit in like 72 of 73 games.

Not only that, but in the Minors he had a 61-game hitting streak.

If you're interested in the streak, the book 56 is a pretty good read about that season for DiMaggio.
