It's bad but the no homerun call against Oakland has to be the worst IMO."The best thing about being a football player at Alabama...winning...winning." -Mark Barron

Re: 5/20 - 5/26 Game Discussion Thread
The home plate ump in the Rockies/Giants game just blew a call in the bottom of the 7th calling Brandon Belt out on a tag at home plate when Belt was clearly safe. As a Rockies fan I am grateful that the game is still tied. But I must also acknowledge that the umps make mistakes. Video replay would resolve some of these mistakes, but replays would only slow down what is already a long game. Besides things sort of have a way of evening themselves out in baseball. After all, this same home plate ump allowed Belt to walk earlier in this inning on a pitch that was clearly in the strike zone. Not saying the ump was purposely evening things up on his blown call with the tag. It's just that events in baseball even themselves up over time.
Edited to add: looks like the umps just blew another call against the Giants in this game. Arenado clearly missed Scutaro with his tag attempt at 3rd, but the ump based on his vantage point still called Marco out.Last edited by My993C2; 05-25-2013, 06:13 PM.Comment

I'm at the giants game right now. I've never seen such a display of ignorance. I wasn't sure on the Brandon Belt play, but the Marco S slide was so clear the whole stadium burst into boo's. that was actually kind of cool to hear.
Edit: the home ump was the one that made both calls. It was basically a full on boo choirs, until the top of the ninth.Last edited by buttsakk; 05-25-2013, 06:24 PM.Originally posted by LonghornAt least, no matter how many years go by, I know I will always have Acid's sister to fall back on.Comment

Re: 5/20 - 5/26 Game Discussion Thread
Umpire judgement has been part of the games for decades, dare I say *gasp* since the beginning. I think the fact video games are perfect (for obvious reasons) has clouded the fact that it is human judgement. Yes, some make mistakes. Yes, some make obvious mistakes that even in real time make you wonder. But you have to remember, you have the advantage of seeing replay, after replay, after replay, in slow motion, in extra slow motion, frozen. They do not in most cases. Nor would you in that situation. Is that a reason for video replay? Yes. But human judgement has been part of the game for over 100 years. It would be nice to see it enhanced, but over the course of the year, you'll have some go for you, you'll have some go against you. Unless you can prove so-and-so is out to get your team, I don't necessarily see an issue with it... yet. It does seem like there are more bad calls than normal at this point, but clusters are not impossible.Comment

I have no doubts it's an aberration but the Angels have quietly won 7 straight and Mike Trout has been red hot.Comment

Add this Bill Ripken color guy on Fox Sports to my list of annoying broadcasters. Shows poor coordination with his PBP man.
And he is allll about Brycey..... even when he's striking out. Bufoon.
Well, isn't this an interesting piece of trivia on Billy:

Since the OS censoring won't pick up on the link name since it contains the F bomb, I'll reprint here:
SpoilerBilly Ripken's **** Face baseball card
Fleer subsequently rushed to correct the error, and in their haste, released versions in which the text was scrawled over with a marker, whited out with correction fluid, and also airbrushed. On the final, corrected version, Fleer obscured the offensive words with a black box (this was the version included in all factory sets). Both the original card and many of the corrected versions have become collector's items as a result. There are at least ten different variations of this card. As of February 2009 the white out version has a book value of $120.[5]
Years later, Ripken admitted to having written the expletive on the bat; however, he claimed he did it to distinguish it as a batting practice bat, and did not intend to use it for the card. In the same letter, he expressed the opinion that Fleer was well aware of the obscenity, and not only retained but made it even clearer, hoping to benefit from the publicity the card would no doubt receive.

Uh the Brewers are terrible. No reason to be this bad. Lately the offense has been horrendous. Besides Carlos Gomez two homers today the Brewers never had a runner get to second base after the second inning. What a horrible year so far.Comment
