You might want to see how much time Schmidt will be missing this year before you say that. The Giants should be happy they are in such a weak division, because they still have life after sleepwalking through the off-season.

They are still quite solid behind that.

Rueter, Williams, and Tomko will be the top three with Schmidt out. They have a lot of options for the the last two in the staff. They could go with Jesse Foppert, Kevin Correia, Merkin Valdez, and Dustin Hermanson.

Plus they could even call some of those young guys up for spot starts, such as that Lowry guy, Matt Cain, David Aardsma, and Roger Whitaker.

Sure, they could of used Maddux, but who couldn't find a spot for him? The Division is weak, and the Giants have enough to get it done. Unless Rueter goes on the DL again, and/or Williams has a sophmore slump...or....

    Well, Good luck in 2004.

Yeah, good luck is exactly right. They truly are lucky to be in a weak division. Their pitching is a huge question mark to me.

Schmidt is the closest thing they have to an ace, and who knows exactly how long he will be out and how it may affect his whole aeason. That leaves Rueter as the de facto number 1, not a great situation. He is fairly consistent, but his record is only so-so.

Then, you have Jerome Williams, who shows some promise but could go either way and is really too young to be counted on heavily.

Tomko looked really good down the stretch last year, but has always been a real up and down pitcher. He just isn't consistent. There is a reason why this is his 4th team the last 4 years.

Oh, and Foppert is out for this season, by the way.

Well, the Starting rotation isn't going to be a strength, but I think it will hold up. And if not, they could always deal one of the young guys for a veteran.

The Giants don't have much left to trade. Sabian has done a great job of gutting the farm system the past few years making deadline deals. As for Rueter, he's been doing it with smoke and mirrors the past few years and even his health is a question.
