The Yanks MUST sign Maddux. They have to get that payroll over 200 million-- to come this close and not get over that hump is a complete cop-out.

They're not going to get more money from the Cubs.

Hendry has said all along he's not going to get into a bidding war and he's happy with the team the way it is, but they want to leave the door open for Maddux.

I think they also wanted to make sure the Cards didn't get him. But I don't think they would go head-to-head with the Yanks' checkbook.
