    Billy Ball in L.A....Sort of

The Los Angeles Dodgers have named Oakland A's assistant GM Paul DePodesta as there new GM, replacing Dan Evans, DePodesta, 31, has been an assistant for the A's since 1998, when he replaced current Toronto Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi, DePodesta was almost named GM of the A's in 2002 when Billy Beane agreed to go to Boston, but then Beane changed his mind, DePodesta will now get his chance with the Dodgers,
the Dodgers are hoping DePodesta can bring a little "Billy Ball" to L.A.,a team in need of rebuilding, and it needs to start from the farm up, J.P. Ricciardi, another former A's assistant has done a very good job on the free agent market for the Blue Jays in recent years, signing quality mid to low level free agents and keeping the team competitive, while also building up the minor league system, another example of "Billy Ball".
DePodesta has an economics degree from Harvard, something that should come in handy, if DePodesta has learned anything in his time in Oakland, it should be how to make a competitive team on the field without overspending and destroying the farm system, something the former management did a lot of, new Dodgers owner Frank McCourt has said he wants to restore the Dodgers to there glory days, that will be no easy task as McCourt and DePodesta have an uphill battle ahead of them, as Pitchers and Catchers get ready to report to training camp, some of them may not be staying long, as now with a new owner and GM in place, the Dodgers can now focus on the team on the field, and begin searching for offense, something this team lacks.

Heard about their interest about a week ago and have to say that I am very happy that they signed him to be their GM.

Nobody may notice it now, but this is the single greatest move this offseason.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

This "could" backfire on the Dodgers. Why you ask? Well i've read up a little on this guy on another site and while he is very much a Beane Ball disciple he's more of a numbers man than Billy Beane, Theo Epstein and JP Ricciardi are. It is nice to have a GM who is numbers oriented but sometimes you have to look at the personalities of the players involved and make some risky decisions. DePodesta is a guy that ONLY thinks in terms of numbers and well, baseball players aren't automations.

True, but Depodesta is considered the real cornerstone of the Oakland A's. In addition, the numbers he follows have proven to accurately predict player performance.

I don't know if you have read my arguments in other threads, but I truly believe that intangibles and clutch and all that don't exist and don't determine a thing in baseball.

They are clubhouse factors and I seriously don't think it equates to performance on the field.

That being the case, for me, I think this is a great move and I think DePodesta is a great mind.

He doesn't let emotions or characteristics (hmmm, sounds like what a real company should or does do) get in the way of evaluating talent. He looks at the raw numbers.

(I think you were one of the guys that said numbers don't tell the whole story...which is a fine opinion. I have an opinion as well...Guess we'll just have to agree to disagree )
