OK, with free agency the way it is, what do you think the minimum service a player should have with a team in order to have that team retire his jersey? Do you think there is a team who, at this point, should retire Alex Rodriguez's jersey for example? If Nomar were to get traded this year, should the Red Sox retire his #5?
<hr /></blockquote><font class="post">
Rodriguez has not done anything worth having his number retired, yet, maybe while he is with the Yankees that will change, but for now he does not deserve it, if the Red Sox trade Nomar, then no, he also should not have his number retired,
it used to be if a player played his whole career with the same team, and was a good player he would have his number retired, because the way the game is now, and with free agency the way it is, i don't think that we will see too many more numbers retired,
here is a list of players that will likely have there numbers retired,
Jeff Bagwell, Houston, 5
Craig Biggio, Houston, 7
Barry Bonds, San Francisco, 25
John Franco, Mets, 45
Barry Larkin, Cincinnati, 11
Edgar Martinez, Seattle, 11
Tim Salmon, Anaheim, 15
John Smoltz, Atlanta, 29
Sammy Sosa, Cubs, 21
Frank Thomas, White Sox, 35
Bernie Williams, Yankees, 51
If Nomar finishes his career in Boston then they should retire his number, the same goes for Derek Jeter in New York,
i know a couple of players on this list started out with different teams, but i don't think anyone would argue that they deserve to have there numbers retired with there teams, as they have been major contributers on and off the field.
<hr /></blockquote><font class="post">
I don't know about Tim Salmon. There are a couple more that are pretty much locks though.
Hoffman in San Diego
Johnson in Arizona
Gonzalez in Arizona
Walker in Colorado
Clemens in Boston and probably New York
Maddux in Atlanta and maybe Chicago
Here are a couple more that will also get retired,
Gwynn is getting his number retired in San Diego later this year.
Ripken in Baltimore, if it hasn't already been retired.
McGwire in St. Louis and maybe in Oakland.Comment

Re: FA and retiring numbers
I agree with Rsox I do think tho that a player should have spent at least 5 yrs with said team before having their number retired unless they've done something very significant for that team/broken records.
The Blue Jays have stubbornly refused to retire their numbers which I think is stupid as I remember one time a player was wearing Pat Borders' old number and it caused a stink.
Blue Jays who's numbers should be retired:
Dave Stieb (37)
Joe Carter (29)
Tony Fernandez (1)
Tom Henke (50)
Pat Borders (10)
Roberto Alomar (12)
Paul Molitor (19)Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

I'll bet good moneys ARod's number gets retired in Seattle. He helped put that team back on the map, along with Jr. and the Unit. And if San Diego can retire Garvey's numbers because of one damn hit, even though it was a pretty big hit, I can see other teams retiring numbers for players that had short stints on their teams.

A-Rods number will not get retired in Seattle. The fans wouldn't like it one bit.Comment
