FA and retiring numbers
OK, with free agency the way it is, what do you think the minimum service a player should have with a team in order to have that team retire his jersey? Do you think there is a team who, at this point, should retire Alex Rodriguez's jersey for example? If Nomar were to get traded this year, should the Red Sox retire his #5?Tags: None -
Re: FA and retiring numbers
I'm a big on jersey numbers. I can tell you what number anyone is if I see it one time, I always remember it for some reason. When I play games on XBOX I always make sure a player NEVER wears a number of a retired player. And furthermore, I retire players numbers myself (don't allow new players to wear them) once sure fire hall of famers reitre that will have the numbers retired.
As for A-Rod, no way. Not with Texas, how long was he there? And definately not with Seattle. If he stays in New York and wins a championship or two then thats where it will be retired. He'll definately be inducted into the hall of fame but to have a nubmer retired you have to be a player that REALLY meant something to that PARTICULAR team and not just baseball in general. -

Rodriguez has not done anything worth having his number retired, yet, maybe while he is with the Yankees that will change, but for now he does not deserve it, if the Red Sox trade Nomar, then no, he also should not have his number retired,
it used to be if a player played his whole career with the same team, and was a good player he would have his number retired, because the way the game is now, and with free agency the way it is, i don't think that we will see too many more numbers retired,
here is a list of players that will likely have there numbers retired,
Jeff Bagwell, Houston, 5
Craig Biggio, Houston, 7
Barry Bonds, San Francisco, 25
John Franco, Mets, 45
Barry Larkin, Cincinnati, 11
Edgar Martinez, Seattle, 11
Tim Salmon, Anaheim, 15
John Smoltz, Atlanta, 29
Sammy Sosa, Cubs, 21
Frank Thomas, White Sox, 35
Bernie Williams, Yankees, 51
If Nomar finishes his career in Boston then they should retire his number, the same goes for Derek Jeter in New York,
i know a couple of players on this list started out with different teams, but i don't think anyone would argue that they deserve to have there numbers retired with there teams, as they have been major contributers on and off the field.Comment

Re: FA and retiring numbers
I'll bet good moneys ARod's number gets retired in Seattle. He helped put that team back on the map, along with Jr. and the Unit. And if San Diego can retire Garvey's numbers because of one damn hit, even though it was a pretty big hit, I can see other teams retiring numbers for players that had short stints on their teams.Comment

I think some of the relatively young franchises are a little more eager to retire jerseys (except for the Yankees who have retired #10 Phil Rizzuto, the greatest short stop who ever lived).Comment
