Bartman should be a rich man right now!
I don't understand how someone can take Bartman's ball when he is the one who caught it and caused all the trouble in the first place. That $100+ Thousand belongs to him. I don't get it, the Cub Fans redicule the poor man and then they have a party for the ball and not Bartman who caused the whole mess in the first place. They have a party in his name basically by auctioning off HIS ball and he gets nothing. What a crock! I think he should sue and get something out of this.

Re: Bartman should be a rich man right now!
Just to add a little veracity to your comments ... Bartmann is not the person who caught the ball. He was the first one to touch it, but he deflected it. A lawyer by the name of Jim (funny how the press article I read conveniently left off his last name, huh) who actually caught the ball and was the one to sell it.
I'm not sure what I think about who should get what money. Though I am pretty cool with the charity part of all this. What I do know is that Steve Bartmann deserves better. The poor guy did the same thing as six or seven other people close to the ball on that play. He was not the only one who reached for it, but he was the one to touch it. And I bet that among the idiots who threw beer and peanuts at him were some of those same people who tried to do what he did.
It's sad really. The kid loves baseball. The kid loves Chicago Cubs baseball. And he may forever be afraid to step into the Friendly Confines again. It's too bad that the Cubs didn't play better in game 7 of the NLCS. One, because then maybe the rabid fans would've forgiven the poor man. But also before game 7, William Peterson (of CSI fame, who is a Chicago native), was interviewed and he wanted to take Steve Bartmann to a game of the World Series had the Cubs made it. I can't remember if it was the first game, or the first game played at Wrigley. Too bad it didn't work out. That would've been nice to see.
In my opinion, the cool thing to do would've been to give the ball to Bartmann and let him decide what to do with it. -

Re: Bartman should be a rich man right now!
I dont feel bad for Bartman really. Not everyone would have reached for the ball. Several people do and would but this is a consequence of doing that. Something like this was bound to happen where such stupidity was punished. Its unfortunate for Bartman that he was the unlucky person who finally had the controversy find him. Lets not forget too that Wrigley of all places has a tradition of throwing back HR balls hit by other teams. What Bartman did was not consistent with this. I like how everyone tries to downplay what Bartman did. What I think was kind of telling was how Bartman at first resisted being escorted out of the stadium. One thing that Ive found interesting was how Bartmans name was released. I remember noone knew his name that night while he was being held in the stadium security office. I wonder if it was someone he knew or whether it was someone who worked at the stadium? Has anyone seen him since? I know he changed his ph # in short order and I think he moved although Im not sure. I wonder if he quit his job? Does anyone know what has become of ol' Bartman?Comment

Re: Bartman should be a rich man right now!
Huh?? A "consequence of doing that"??? "Something like this was bound to happen where such stupidity was punished." ???
Are you really saying that you condone people hating the man, and throwing beer, peanuts, and whatever else at him? Do you condone people wanting to harm him, for goodness sakes?? I sincerely hope not. The man reached out to grab a souvenir at a playoff game. There are greater tragedies in life.
As I recall, the Cubs still had a chance to get out of that fateful 8th inning. And, lets not forget that they still had an opportunity in game 7 to win.
The man does not deserved to be punished. He deserves to be left alone.

OK, there was a noticeable shift in momentum after this happened whether anyone wants to admit it or not. It was the the first of a series of events that lead to the Cubs unraveling.
Im uncomfortable with your use of the word "condone" because it doesnt matter what I condone. One thing I dont condone are the self appointed morality police who go around telling people whether hostility is justified. If you do something stupid like this isnt it reasonable to expect that people are going to be steamed at you? Why cant you understand that? I, myself, would never do anything or confront him if thats what youre asking?Comment

This could be the funniest thing ever that someone has written in response to an opinion I've given ... on a message board on which the purpose is to state opinions. I'll leave it to you to figure out why ...
Do I think it is reasonable to expect that someone would be angry if I did something stupid? Hmmm ... I suppose, if I agreed that what I did was stupid. But to the point of assault for touching a baseball?? Come on ...Now that to me is dumb and ignorant ... and, in fact, punishable. Not touching a baseball ... bah!
I'm happy to hear that you would not have approached him, but if you think that the beer throwing and physical threats were justified, then I emphatically disagree with your position.
That's it. Nothing personal. We just on opposite ends of the spectrum on this point ...Comment
