question about number of pitch types pitchers have

I've been playing MVP, i'm not a massive baseball fan, so I don't really know much about what pitches a pitcher throws. I guess it's gotta be kinda tough to learn a lot of pitches, and throw them effectively, just noticing that some pitchers only have 2 pitches, vs others that have 5 or so. Thought some of the more knowledgeable baseball fans might be able to chime in for me

Well a good starter or any starter for that matter should at least have 3 pitches in his arsenal. A fastball, sinker and curve are the most common.

Relievers OTOH can get away with only 2 pitches as they rarely if ever face the batting order more than once.

Yeah, starters will have at least 3 pitches while relievers will have at least 2 pitches. Usually they'll have a fastball and a breaking pitch, or an offspeed pitch. Sometimes the pitchers will have all breaking stuff.
