    Formula for "Magic Number"

Does anyone know how to ccompute the "magic number" needed for a team to win its division?
    I think its something like:
(Total Number Of Games Left - Number Of Games Ahead Of Closest Team + 1)
    Am I close???

I think you hit the nail on the head, I am not exactly sure though. I don't know if it's exact or not, but it looks close.

        LOL Heelfan.......

I dont know, Skip Carey said it once during a game a few weeks ago, when our number was 27, but I totally forgot it.

Go check out Yahoo or somethin and search for "Magic Number Formula"

There are actually several ways to determine it:

The easiest is 163 minus # wins of 1st place team minus # of losses for second place team.

            Braves as of today:

            163 - 87 (braves wins) - 67 (phillies losses) = 9

            Braves magic # is 9

Its how many of a combination of team ahead wins and team behind losses there need to be for the team ahead to clinch. So if the Yankees mgic nuber is 3, and they win its down to 2. And if the 2nd place team lost too, its down to1. Like that

                from my memory:
lets take the astros and cardinals

                St. Louis 78-61
                Houston 73-66

                step 1: HOU wins + HOU losses=games played(73+66=139)
                step 2: season length - HOU GP=games left(162-139=23)
                step 3: HOU wins + games left=possible wins(73+23=96)
                step 4: HOU possible wins-STL wins+1=magic #(96-78=18+1=19)
                well, there ya go.

                  Re: Formula for \"Magic Number\"

                  163 minus 78 (stl wins) minus 66 (houston losses) = 19

Magic # for STL is 19
