    Greg Vaughn Retires

OF Greg Vaughn announced his retirement 3 days after being reassigned to St.Louis Cardinals minor league camp, Vaughn, 38, had said that he would retire if he did not make the Cardinals roster, was competing for the teams LF job, but a poor spring (.139 AVG, 2 RBI) ended his time with the Cardinals.

Vaughn, who started his career with the Brewers in 1989, spent 6+ seasons in Milwaukee before being traded to the Padres in july 1996, at one time held the record for hitting the most Home Runs by a player traded in mid-season, was a major contributer to the Padres late season stretch run in '96, helping them win the N.L. West for the first time since 1984, struggled in his next season with the Padres, but in 1998 became the only Padre to hit 50 HR in a season, and leading the team to the World series.

Vaughn would be traded again after the '98 season, the Padres would trade him to the Cincinnati Reds, and again Vaughn would have a monster year slugging 45 HR for the Reds, and helping force a one game playoff with the Mets to determine the N.L. wild card, and after the '99 season would sign a 4 year contract with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Vaughns numbers would start to decline after his arrival in Tampa, going from 45 HR down to 28 in 2000 and 24 in 2001, in 2002 injury's would limit Vaughn to only 69 games and 8 HR, last spring the Devil Rays released Vaughn, in the final year of his contract, he would sign on with the Colorado Rockies and start the year in the minor leagues, Vaughn would play 22 games for the Rockies last season, he hit 3 HR.

Greg Vaughn retires with a career .242 AVG 355 HR and 1072 RBI in 15 seasons.

Poor guy, he's just an example of how injuries can ruin a good career.

I wouldn't say it ruined a good career. It was a productive and decent career. I do agree thta the injuries caught up with him in the end. Funny how his skills declined when he signed that big money deal with the D-Rays tho.
