    Re: Yankees-D-Rays

What can I say that hasn't been said?

    well....Lou has officially done it:

The Tampa Bay Devil Rays are officially the Mariners of the East.

think about it. They've got all bases covered, every position has a great player for it and a decent backup incase they get injured. Pitching isn't GODLY, I'll admit that, but it can get the job done. If there's trouble you've got Halama and Abbot in the pen who can come on. Why do I call them the Mariners of the East? They will play in much the same way as the M's do. smallball, not all about hitting homers and junk, but about moving the runner over and using speed to get the runs. Lou has really made that team into a near duplicate, except with maybe a little less power. Just as you said MarWinner, if their pitching stays together they should do pretty well. What you have to dig your head out of the sand for is that the D-rays actually have a much better Pitching staff than the Orioles do, regardless of what any O's fan thinks. The Jays rely on an old untrustworthy vet in Hentgen to deliver as a starter, as you can clearly see, there are teams in the east that have a worse put together pitching squad than the D-rays. While the Jays have Halladay, Batista, and Lilly....what happens in the other two games? So yeah, if the D-rays pitching holds up they really have a shot to leave both the Jays and the O's in the dust. Third is not impossible for them. Just look what they did to the Yanks in the first game of the season. Regardless of the denial Yanks fans might be in, fact is that the D-rays pitching beat their pitching, and the D-rays small ball beat the Yanks power. Obviously they aren't going to beat the yanks every day, that's impossible. Infact I'm betting dime to dollar the Yanks win tomorrow for the second game in Tokyo. Point is that they did a good job of showing in the first damn game of the season how they can and will win games, even against the best of teams.

I agree with most of the stuff you said, but I think their pitching staff is a bit shaky.

As of right now, their staff is...

      1. Victor Zambrano
      2. Jeremi Gonzalez
      3. Mark Hendrickson
      4. Paul Abbott
      5. Doug Waechter

I like Zambrano, Gonzalez, and Waechter. I think all three have alot of potential, and should become good pitchers down the road. That said, they're all still young and are going to have their ups and downs.

I really don't see what Tampa sees in Hendrickson. Granted, he's only had one full season. But I look at his ERA from last year and see 5.51, not too good. Even his adjusted ERA is close to 5. In two years with the Blue Jays Triple A team he had an ERA over 4. I haven't seen much of him, so maybe he's better than his numbers show, but I don't see anything that warrants giving him the #3 spot.

Abbott gives the rotation a veteran presence. But he's only pitched over 100 innings twice in his career, and has had arm problems over the last couple years, which makes me wonder how long he'll hold up.

Fortunately for Tampa, they have a couple guys to fill in if needed on the roster. Damien Moss, Jorge Sosa, and Doug Braezelton(I think he's starting the season in the minors) all started games last year, so if one guy currently in the rotation falters, I don't think Pinella will hesitate to make a change.

If Zambrano, Waechter, and Gonzalez live up to their potential, and Abbott can stay healthy, I can see this team possibly finishing third in the East. They should definitely get the run support, and I think Baez-Carter-Halama won't blow too many games. Pinella's definitely got them moving in the right direction.

...lol, see, this is why we have these opening games in Japan. How many times during the season do people actually talk D'Rays baseball?!

People, the Rays are only 1-0. Let's not jump the gun here. While they are headed in the right direction, they are far from where they want to be. And they are far from being the Mariners of the East.

Yanks are stomping the D-rays right now. It was 11-1 in the 7th. Posada went deep twice and Matsui went deep as well.
