    C Joe Girardi announced his retirement, one day after being assigned to the Yankees minor league camp, Girardi was trying to win the Yankees backup C job which for the second straight season goes to John Flaherty.

    Girardi, 39, returned to the Yankees on a minor league invite this spring, Girardi was a big part of the Yankees championship runs in 1996, 1998 and 1999,
    Girardi came to the major leagues with the Cubs in 1989, but his career did not really take off untill he joined the Colorado Rockies as there first ever starting Catcher in 1993, he spent 3 seasons with the Rockies before joining the Yankees in 1996, he would return to the Cubs in 2000 where he spent 3 more seasons, with the Cardinals last season injury's limited him to only 16 games, Girardi is expected to join another former Yankee star Paul O'Neill in the Broadcast booth this season.

    Joe Girardi finishes with a .267 AVG 36 HR and 422 RBI in 15 seasons.

    I will never forget that day in June when he came out with tears in his eyes and announced that the days game betweent the Cards and Cubs was cancelled.

                He was always a very capable catcher and yes I still remember the image of him with tears making that announcement.

                On another note...he's starting off as a very bland broadcaster in the booth. Hopefully he'll get better as time goes by.

                  He was always a very capable catcher and yes I still remember the image of him with tears making that announcement.

                  On another note...he's starting off as a very bland broadcaster in the booth. Hopefully he'll get better as time goes by.
