Well my Pirates also beat Philly, but I really do think they're as bad as people have made them out to be. They do have good starting pitching, but that's it. Their pathetic offense will catch up to them through out an entire 162 game season.

Seriously though...I don't think the offense is going to be quite as bad as people think. Especially once we get someone not named Chris Stynes to play third. I'd almost take Rob Mackowiak over him (note: I said almost).

I would like to see Littlefield pick up a good third baseman for Benson when he's eventually traded. Of course, we wouldn't NEED to pick up a third baseman if Benson hadn't been hurt last season....

Definatly Stynes is the weak link of a bad offense. Third base should be what Littlefield is looking for when he's trying to dump Benson. Even packaging someone with Benson to get a third basemen wouldn't be bad (I'm looking at Jack Wilson. I think Jose Castillo proved he deserved a shot at the big leagues plus Freddy Sanchez will be back).

The only other thing I want to know is what does Craig Wilson have to do to get regular playing time after Jason Bay comes back. Mac seems to think Simon is a huge key to the offense and with Mondesi & Bay in corners Craig will probably miss at-bats again.

I think the season won't be nearly as bleak as some people think but, I'm not expecting the Pirates to make a real playoff run on the other hand. Just get some of the kids time to play and see what they have to work with.

I agree...especially once Bay comes back, I think Simon should be history. He could be packaged with Benson to get some help at third, and probably somewhere else. Wilson is about even with Simon at first, and he's much better at the plate. Simon's habit of swinging at everything gets results sometimes, but also results in a lot of routine outs. Plus, if Simon is gone, we could call up Rivera as a defensive replacement.

I see Mackowiak getting several starts at third after about 2 weeks unless Stynes starts hitting.

Can Bobby Hill play third? (question, not sarcasm)

I really like Tike Redman. He seems to be the sparkplug that this team needs.

I also wonder about Craig Wilson. The guy is tied for the team lead in HR's during Spring Training, belts one today and we all know will be back on the bench once Bay is ready to play (Mondesi of course moving to RF). I'd love to see what this guy can do when he starts the majority of the games.

Oh yeah, if DL doesn't look for a 3B when he unloads Benson or Mondesi, then he's crazy! That seems to be the biggest hole in the organization. After trading Ramirez we really don't have any quality 3B on the team or in the minors.
