Mookie Betts maintaining residency in Tennessee--a state without an income tax on wages--projects to save him about $34 million on taxes from Dodgers contract compared to residing in California. In a @Sportico story, @SportsTaxMan and I detail the numbers: https://t.co/p2zNs0cwPg https://t.co/a4DjGGZ76J

I get why players would want that long-term security, but I've never understood why teams would commit that kind of money long-term.

We could come up with an exhaustive list of transcendent stars who flamed out after 2 or 3 years.

Do the same $40mil for 5 or 6 years.

No mention of Billy Beane being out in Oakland?

Hard to quantify his impact on the game so far this century. Shame he never got any of his teams to the Series.

.. the As should probably just follow the Raiders to Vegas.

He probably should have left years and years ago. That franchise is forever stunted staying in that market situation, which sucks to say as a fan of those teams.

They really should move As out of Oakland already.

Not sure if pandemic helps or hurts their case to stay though. Helps because maybe people are less willing right now to buy a team and build a stadium. But could hurt since they're losing money with no games.

What will most likely happen is they stay in Oakland, the pandemic is used to rationalize them not getting a new stadium any time soon (or ever), and they will kick the can down the road another decade.

The only way I could see it being a nice deke is if a baserunner was on with less than two outs and didn't tag beforehand so that he can double him up. However, it would probably turn into something like in football where once "home run" was declared by the field umpire, it's the equivalent of whistling a ball dead, and therefore runners can possibly safely return to their bases since they advanced under the umpire's decision.

On that front, I'm glad how things like drop-third strikes in baseball can't be considered offensive interference if a batter-runner proceeds to first base despite it being occupied with two outs, even if the catcher throws in that direction and overthrows first base in the process (probably because it can be an instinctive reaction, and maybe we can't assume catcher's intent as he could have been trying to get the runner on first base instead on a pickoff). Same is true if a batter starts advancing to first base on a walk with only three balls pitched: if other runners advance by force and the realization occurs that the batter hasn't yet completed his turn, the other runner(s) don't have to retreat if they safely made the next bag. Essentially, when they were between bases, they were also liable of being put out at that time. Stolen base, haha.

Beneficial or harmful for who? I prefer a free market approach (or at least an approximation) in principle. That's besides of me being a Yankees fan. I don't believe in crocodile tears from the owners and if they can't truly afford it then sell the team and let someone else take a crack at it. Bottom line is, there are different markets, different levels of wealth and in baseball you truly get to see a "David vs. Goliath" matchup.

Case in point: 2020 Opening Day roster for the Rays: 93M, Dodgers: 225M. This is was also the impetus for the the A's to implement their Moneyball strategy that not only revolutionized baseball, but, without exaggeration, revolutionized sports as a whole. It spurred innovation.

And now everyone over 29 is looked suspiciously in baseball and the less paid, the better. So how is that free market working for all of ya players :P
