      Re: MLB Off-Topic

      More literal minor news.

Vancouver will remain part of Jays organization despite earlier reports that they would be become Oaklands affiliate.

Instead, Oakland will get Lansing (Jays Low A affiliate since 2005).

So with Dunedin being demoted to Low A, I guess Vancouver could become Jays high A affiliate.

I wonder what other minor league shuffling we could see, because Dunedin is where Jays ST facilities are, so I don't think they're phasing out Dunedin. Buffalo obviously won't ever be let go from their organization after everything this year, and if they're keeping Vancouver, it could lead to New Hampshire being the odd team out, maybe Dunedin promoted to AA in the future?

To go along with news of the MiLB shuffling, MLB has announced a "draft league" which is basically a league which let's the draft eligible players play since they wouldn't have gotten much if any of a chance to play this season for obvious reasons.

The Fresno Grizzlies were to told that if they didn't accept demotion (from AAA to A) then they wouldn't be involved at all and would have to be an independent team.

Twins are taking St Paul as their AAA team, opening Rochester for the Nats. Houston is leaving Round Rock for the Sugar Land Skeeters who are now a AAA team, and Texas is supposedly taking Round Rock. So with Milwaukee being without a AAA team currently (San Antonio to AA), it looks like Milwaukee and Nashville will be paired together once again. Right???

Does BABIP somewhat have holes in its measurement?

Although rare, it seems it would not count inside-the-park home runs toward its calculations. I also doubt they consider balls that are hit high off of a wall that cannot be defended on the fly.

Say a player feasts on the Green Monster by peppering singles and doubles off the wall every at-bat. If BABIP's intent is to kind of show success heavily dependent on defense, then this would not be doing its job in this case.

Again, this is probably too rare to make more than a couple of points' difference, but it's interesting that this distinguishment isn't acknowledged either.

BABIP counts all balls put in play. It doesn't omit any. Why wouldn't they count inside the park HRs or balls off the wall?

In less... whatever.. news. Len Kasper is leaving the Cubs broadcast booth to do radio for the White Sox. Chris Myers apparently is expected to replace him.

I am deeply distraught. Len and JD is the best combo in the business. And I'm not a fan of Chris Myers.

I don't believe BABIP knows how to distinguish an inside-the-park home run versus one over the fence.

Regarding the wall play, the intent of the statistic is to show whether some merit of "luck" is going for or against a hitter/pitcher at any time. Statcast now looks more toward things like exit velocity and trajectory with regard to success of course, but all I'm saying is if the defense has zero opportunity on balls off a high wall just like they don't on balls over a fence, why should one count towards BABIP and the other one not?

Why does it need to distinguish either? It's a hit on a ball in play. Home runs are counted toward BABIP, too. Every ball put in play is measured equally.

I think you're looking for OPS on balls in play.

Seems like this was Len's decision, not Marquee's. It sucks but good for him for pursuing his passion for working in radio.

Homeruns are actually subtracted from the hit and AB totals in BABIP calculations:

The formula: Hits minus home runs, divided by at-bats minus home runs minus strikeouts plus sacrifice flies (H - HR)/(AB - HR - K + SF).
Tristan H. Cockcroft tries to explain the BABIP (batting average on balls in play) stat, and how fantasy owners can use it to analyze player performance.

An inside the park homer is both a hit on a ball put in play and a homerun for statistical purposes but it gets excluded from the calculation.

Yes, thanks. This is why I was talking about it.

The intent of the statistic is to measure bouts of success against the defense. The defense cannot defend a home run over the fence, but they can defend a home run inside the park... and yet both are ignored. Likewise, the defense cannot defend balls off a high wall much like they can't defend balls over the fence, yet balls of the wall count.

These are few and far between, but it's a gaping hole in the statistic, provided its intent.

A player could steal 60 bases a year for the next 22 seasons and Rickey Henderson would still be the SB king...
