Yup. That's why I don't get too caught up in drafts and prospects and trading them for proven players, etc.

Scouting baseball talent (particularly hitting) might be the toughest thing in sports.

Yep would love to get into that profession. But way too hard and couldn't handle the pressure from owner's and GM's.

So the toughest thing to do in sports is a battle between a) hitting a baseball, and b) figuring out who can hit a baseball

I'm not sure I get this post since I didn't address the former, but yeah, both of those things are really, really hard. I think Michael Jordan will definitely tell you hitting a baseball is hard.

And since part B is what I posted on, feel free to use Wikipedia and look up any draft you want to. In a typical 1st round, you'll have a handful of All-Stars, a few solid role players, and the rest are guys you don't recognize because they never made it to the majors. And these were guys that the professional community regarded as the best amateurs in the game.

You can't just look at a guy's physique and say "he'll be a good hitter." He needs to have great vision and great technical skills and both of those things are very hard to spot with the naked eye. That stands in contrast to football or basketball where it's far easier to spot the next superstar.

I worded it poorly, wasn't challenging your post, merely combining it with an old adage for funzies

Not sure where to put this as it's not big enough of a story to warrant its own thread but it's significant enough to be noted

Doug Melvin to leave as GM of the Brewers, will stay in an advisory role

It goes to show what kind of age we're living in as this was announced via Twitter today. I wonder what this means for Gord Ash as he's been the assistant there with Melvin. I kinda wish Melvin was completely free to go anywhere as I think he'd be a good candidate for the presidency job in Toronto. I have a feeling the Brewers are going to go for a younger more SABR type of GM going forward.

I guess this is worthy of Off-Topic: I never realized that Paul Giamatti (the actor) was Bart Giamatti's (the commissioner who banned Pete Rose) son.

Interesting fact of the day; move along now.

I am 100% sure the only reason you want him in Toronto is because he's Canadian, lol. There is no reason to believe Melvin is a better candidate than the people who have already been mentioned, he didn't really do anything in his time in Milwaukee.

                      Pretty much

I wasn't being completely serious about that but it's a nice PR angle.

I wouldn't be surprised if Ray Montgomery is selected... Brewers current scouting director and he had the same title with the Diamondbacks.

What do people think? Could this realistically be something we see happen somewhere down the road in MLB?

I saw Eric Byrnes interview on MLB Network before he went to this, and he suggested that MLB should try out stuff like this, and pitch clocks, during the ASG. Of course the ASG would have to give up "winner gets home advantage in WS" stuff, but would be interesting to see ASG become almost like a trial game. Pro players getting to be guinea pigs for future rule changes, and get to see how they like it,while playing a meaningless game.

MLB weird stat (and a testament to the Jays' awesome run support for him)

No pitcher in MLB history has had a record of 11-2 or better with an ERA over 4.15 until now as Drew Hutchison has an 11-2 mark with a 5.26 ERA.

Speaking of weird stats, the top five lefty pitchers with the highest K/BB ratios since 1900 are all active pitchers (Bumgarner, Lee, Hamels, Price, and Kershaw).

The thing about those 11 wins,he's actually earned it too. He's never won a game where he allowed 4+ ER. And those high scoring games, the bullpen let up the losing run,so he's off the hook for those games in terms of W-L record.

Just a weird season overall for him on the statsheet. If only Jays could find way to get consistent Hutchison. He's been great at home and horrible on the road, I really think there's just something mental that needs to be worked on.
