I don't think pace of play is a huge issue either though I do think some of the shenanigans at the plate by hitters can be tiring and that should be regulated more strictly.

Well, you're in luck, because there's not much that can be done when teams score 8 runs in an inning, or managers bring in pitchers to face individual batters. And MLB doesn't want to take this too far, because longer games = more commercials.

MLB has already gotten their money from the TV deals. Extra long games gives them nothing additional. That money goes to the networks carrying the games.

Do you really think if they actually wanted longer games because they benefited they would be taking extra measures to shorten them? That doesn't even make sense.

This was never said to be enforced by umpires, only fined by MLB. So it was never going to affect the game live.

Are you sure about that? For some reason I thought there was a provision in addition to the fine where the umpires could assign a strike?

I think you're right. I seem to remember that there would be a fine associated with it and as far as in-game goes the umps DID have the option to allow the pitcher to throw one and call a strike no matter where it went.

EDIT: Here we go, this was from last offseason's AFL implementation of the rules that more or less came to being last year except the official 20 second pitch rule though I believe the spirit of that rule is enforced:

A pitcher shall be allowed 20 seconds to throw each pitch. The batter must be in the box prepared for the pitch during the entire 20-second period. If the batter steps out of the box during the 20-second period, the pitcher may deliver the pitch and the umpire may call a strike, unless the batter was first granted time by the umpire.
and here's the entire batter's box rule which was fully enforced last season:

The batter shall keep at least one foot in the batter's box throughout his at-bat, unless one of a series of established exceptions occurs, in which case the batter may leave the batter's box but not the dirt area surrounding home plate. (Exceptions include a foul ball or a foul tip; a pitch forcing the batter out of the batter's box; "time" being requested and granted; a wild pitch or a passed ball; and several others.)

Just bought my Phillies/Cubs tickets at Wrigley Field for May 28th! Visiting Chicago for the first time ever Memorial Day weekend! Can't wait! I may get tickets for the game on the 29th too. I think these seats will be awesome.

Nice! I'm trying to plan a trip for the end of the season, but I don't know where. I was going to go to Boston for Ortiz's last series, but after losing my second job it might not be viable.

I am hoping to get to PNC Park again this season too. Haven't been there since 2009. 55 is coming to Philly to visit with me in April and catch a game here. We are also gonna drive down to Baltimore to catch an Orioles/White Sox game. Visiting Cleveland sometime this summer on a weekend is also a good possibility.

Enjoy the city, Phils. Lots of stuff to do over Memorial Day weekend.

Well, technically that's always been the rule. But I've never seen it enforced beyond the college level.
