Yea I don't see how injuries could ever part of the argument against. Might as well not have the derby or the game all together. Can't have pitchers throwing 100% or guys sprinting out of the box for sure.

Skills comp would be a thousand times more interesting than the old timers / celebrity softball game. There's been all this recent whispers about wanting a pitchers HRD when instead there should be some serious talks about a skills comp.

I don't think we'd ever have a competition for pitchers but I'd like to see guys sprint or see who the fastest guy to 1B is or the fastest to steal a base. How awesome could that have been back in the day...fastest time: Rickey or Tim Raines? Best arm: Jose Guillen or Vladimir Guerrero?

I mean, I wouldn't regulate it where it's JUST actual all-stars. There are folks in the skills comp, dunk contest and 3-pt contest in the NBA that aren't all-stars that season. There is SO much potential MLB can tap into to really showcase the league's talent and more so, make the all-star week really something to watch.

As far as injury goes, I was watching Greg Amsinger talk last night on MLB Network about the pitcher HR derby as he was lobbying for it while Pedro Martinez was down playing it.

Pedro: "The risk is too great. What about the Giants? They're 5-6 games up in the division...what if there was an injury to Bumgarner?"

Amsinger: "By that logic, Bumgarner should never drive then."

      Pedro's face:

Im sure if the Giants could arrange (force him to accept lol) it, Bumgarner wouldn't be driving himself either.

Now I'm not saying you can't injure yourself hitting, but I think he has a much higher probability of injuring himself pitching in the All Star game (or the bullpen session prior to it) before taking 30 swings in a HRD.

If they're afraid he's going to injure himself hitting, he might as well not take batting practice before games as well. Seriously.

On that same token, there are other players probably more deserving to participate than Bumgarner, even though his HR/PA rate is larger than that of the majority of the players in the league (plus every participant in the HRD last year).

Pitchers don't belong in the home run derby. You don't want to see hitters pitching in the game, so I don't want to see pitchers hitting.

I think a guy is more likely to injure himself going whole ham like with some of these suggestions above. Fastest to 1B means they have to try to hit top speed...and then a hamstring pops in an exhibition and everyone realizes that it was a bad idea. Same with best OF arm...guys going max throw in an exhibition is not going to end well.

As for pitchers batting in the HRD, I'm not sure that this is any better or worse than taking BP before a start (do pitchers even do that anymore, lol?).

I'm not so sure. I mean Babe Ruth is certainly not a fair example as arguably the greatest hitter of all time, but he was a pitcher we didn't mind seeing hitting...even if none of us were alive back then.

I would suggest that by and large we don't want to see hitters pitching or pitchers hitting (unless you're a big fan of NL baseball), but I don't see the harm in giving it a chance. Bumgarner has been wicked with the bat on a per-PA basis.

As for hitters pitching, Christian Bethancourt didn't look so bad with his 96-mph fastball out there on the bump a few weeks ago.

I feel like if a player can do it all, let him.

                Who is "you?"

And I don't get how a game is equitable to the Home Run derby. There are plenty of pitchers who have raw power in that setting and I for one would love to see it regardless of how I feel about seeing them hit in an actual meaningful game.

I hope so. No interest in seeing MadBum in the HR derby.

How is hitters pitching not your favorite thing ever? It's hilarious watching Cliff Pennington come in and blow guys away.

Wright's getting neck surgery. It would be a shame to see his career end like this but I really think he should just retire at this point with his back condition being how it is and now that he's likely gone for the year because of the surgery. His back condition isn't going to get any better.

Sucks to see a guy who's from around here go out like that, but it's been an honor and a privilege to watch Captain America suit up for all these years going back to when I was like 11 and saw him and Reyes on the Tides. Probably my favorite non-Yankee for the way he comes back and does tons of stuff with little kids and in the community, he's just such a great guy. Hate to see this happen to almost anyone if this is truly the end, but damn especially him.
