    Re: MLB Off-Topic

Before Jays game today, Gregg Zaun was talking about how some guys in the MLB are wearing protective padding on their hands for when they steal bases. The problem he brought up is how on the padding, it extends past the hand, so in other words, you're gaining a few extra inches on your reach, which obviously makes a huge difference in a sport that people often say is a "game of inches".

He says the only ones who should be allowed to wear those are ones who've had hand injuries/have been on the DL because of it.

Does anyone see this possibly being a problem in the future? Meaning guys who wear protective padding on their hands, basically "cheating" by gaining a few extra inches on their reach, which makes it easier to steal a base. Because the padding itself could be touching the bag, but your fingertips might not have actually touched the bag yet.

I had never thought about that but it is interesting. I know Marte wears one and it may give a small advantage.

I would disagree though that it should be allowed for those with injuries, it's either allowed or it isn't. If there is a grey area teams/players would just find a way around the rule.

I think it depends on how the runner wears it.

The ones that I've seen don't look like they give a "few extra inches".

        Here's Marte's, which looks a little large:

Anyone who wants to wear one should be allowed to,
But there should be some limit to how far past the fingertips it extends.
It;s not a problem for now, but if it's not addressed & just ignored,
it will be abused at some point down the road. Too many players have no morals
when it comes to gaining a competitive edge. It's always been that way, & it always will.

If NHL goalies played in MLB, they'd be wearing gloves like this....for protection of course.

Johnny Cueto feels pretty upset he never got a White House invite.

Gotta say the Royals look petty for this.

I agree, bad look by the Royals there.

So I have a question, has a game ever been called/postponed due to heat? I know back in the '80s with the astroturf places like St. Louis had on field temperatures in the 130s but I'm curious since we're very protective about hydration and such these days if we haven't seen a game called off due to heat that maybe one day we will.

I ask because during the day before the LAD/STL game the temperature was over a hundred degrees.

In old Arlington Stadium, the Rangers played 90% of their home games at night to avoid the Texas heat from May to September.

IMO, teams are going to think long and hard about bringing him in only because of his price tag....

My interpretation of these incidents is that he's a fierce competitor who is only this frustrated because the Sox have been a losing team for most of his career with them. I don't think either of these happen if he's on a winning team.
Everyone keep on saying Chris Sale is tired of losing. Cheez I am a Braves fan and our star player Freddie Freeman isn't cutting up throwback jersey's and being a malcontent to the front office.
The White Sox were leading the central the first quarter of the season by the way. There's nothing like being a sore loser..

NHL goalie gloves are big, but it's far from the problem with their equipment.

They are making changes this year to it, but I really hope they make them even smaller than they are this year. This is one of the lowest scoring eras in NHL in decades. They're not gonna attract more fans if the games are basically 2-1 games being decided in shootouts.

LOL, agreed. I was just making fun of how any equipment a goalie straps on is automatically 3x the size it needs to be.

I hope so. I hope the changes are similar to the ones Cory Hirsch outlined in that excellent Sportsnet segment. It has to be drastic, not just a nip and tuck here or there.

That's why I'm not too upset with baseball constantly talking about how they can make MLB better. Some of the ideas or concepts they're kicking around are ludicrous but at least they're discussing it.
It doesn't hurt to constantly review the product and make sure it's the best it can be.

The alternative is the NHL who knows the problem but refuses to make easy changes in order to make the game better.
Instead they discuss rinky-dinky changes that have little to no affect, and institute them after 5 years of discussing them.
Make the goalies smaller or make the nets bigger! You don't need to move the red-lines, blue-lines, make faceoff dots in the middle of the ice, add trapazoids, etc, etc.
If the scoring area is too small, make it bigger somehow.
If the NFL suddenly found that their endzone had shrunk by 50%, you can bet your last dollar that they'd unshrink it by the next week's games.
Not in the NHL. They'll let the game deteriorate for 20 years until they decide to change the sound of the goal horns. "That'll cure our issues!"

*Sorry. That was REALLY off-topic. My bad.

As far as the pace of play and such...

Any of you ever watch the LLWS? It's so fun and there is little downtime, even with the coach timeouts and pitching changes and such. It's simply pitcher vs. batter without a bunch of fidgeting.

I want MLB to get back to that...stop putting rosin on your hand every pitch, stop adjusting your gloves, stop thinking about what you want for dinner before you pitch (yeah - looking at you Jon Lester). Play ball.

The thing about pace of play is that it's not bad. Most Jays games finish within 3 hrs. I think what people notice are the national games where it seems like the game absolutely drags. I would wager that if you compare the running time between your local team (Unless you're Boston or NYY) and the nationally televised games odds are the local broadcast ends within the 3 hr window.

Ya, Jays games go by quick. Even more so when you are there live.

Speaking of which, Mark Buehrle is proof of how much time pitchers waste. His games ended in under 2.5hrs on many nights, cause he never wastes any time. Just one pitcher of the two sides not wasting time shortens game lengths that much, can you imagine how quick games would go if both sides did that?
