Stephen Piscotty’s mom passed away yesterday.

Glad he got to go back home for her final days/months

I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

I read that Yu Darvish gave $10,000 for ALS research after the news of Piscotty's mother's death. That was a classy gesture by him. I'm glad that Piscotty got to be with his mother for her final days.

When I was a player I looked at my OBP. I was a leadoff hitter, though. My RISP was never that high, sadly. Don't know why, never felt the pressure of those situations either, but I liked that number.

Anyway, not much WAR up there as you can see. I made a similar point last year about sabermetrics: if you didn't grow up with them (or frankly can't), then it's understandable that you don't put much stock or value into something you're just not familiar with or can't gauge across the spectrum of the sport (not just the league).

Lol, no one cares about WAR. Except when the media starts talking about all-star voting and the HoF, and then it's suddenly the most important thing in the world.

You can't exactly visualize improving your WAR on a day to day, week to week basis either, so it's not a very helpful tool for a player. You really have no idea if you improved your WAR that day, or week, or by how much, you can't work it out. You can't set yourself targets or milestones and frankly, you pretty much just have to take he nerds word for it when their computer spits out a number. It might be useful for execs, but it's utterly useless for a player

Knock it off. You're gonna make it harder for me to dislike him after his next bad start. Just mention stuff that is objectionable about him (if applicable).

Love it. To me, the take-home message here is none of these guys agree on one stat either, lol. A mix of old school and new school thinking. Even a lot of the guys who picked a certain stat as their favorite hedged a little bit about it before deciding.

I wonder what it'll be like in 20 years time when players will have totally grown up in the WAR era. They will know what it's good for.

I'm sure Tyler Austin is a way dirtier player. All of Boston sports media and Sox players have said as much.

This is probably why players don't get to choose their nicknames.

Acuña, at 20 the youngest player in the league, doesn’t yet have a catchy nickname. He calls himself “El Abusador” – “the abuser,” for what he does to baseballs – but that seems like a tough marketing sell.
The Braves have spent the last couple years promising that the farm pipeline is stocked for a long-term run at the postseason starting in 2019. But Acuña might just be a sign that the team’s a bit ahead of schedule.

The two bench clearing incidents that happened back on April 11 between the Sox and Yankees were caused by Austin and his "dirty" slide into Brock Holt. Austin was then drilled by Joe Kelly after Kelly already threw it behind him once (because he's such a garbage pitcher that he couldn't even hit Austin on his first attempt). Boston sports media immediately called Austin a dirty player, while pretty much every neutral observer said there was nothing wrong with Austin's slide.

Going strictly by the rule book, Austin did an "illegal" slide. And in the replay, you can clearly see him move his foot towards Holt's leg.
