Well, I think Cy Young is probably the best pitcher of all time, but I have never seen him pitch so there isn't much fun in picking him. Like someone said, its hard to argue with 511 wins.

My vote for greatest pitcher of all time goes to Roger Clemens. He was a great pitcher in his youth and is still a good pitcher today. He's also been very consistent in terms of his strikeout numbers. The man is going to be number 2 all time on the strikeout list and he has never had a 300 strikeout season. He's won 6 Cy Young's and even an MVP in '86 which is truely impressive. Not many pitchers can even be say they were considered for the MVP, the only case I've seen anyone make was for Pedro Martinez in '99. Roger also ressurrected his career with the Blue Jays when he looked done and then won a few rings and an additional Cy with the Yankees. And he's struck out 20 batters in a single game twice. He should definitly go into the hall with a "B" on his cap though, sorry Roger, but you're not convincing anyone that your best years were in a Yankees uniform.

Ryan was a very good strikout pitcher with a dominating fastball, but he was more of a thrower than a pitcher. He could blow guys away but his walk totals, ERA, and losses weren't very impressive. He's definitly a good pitcher but far from the greatest pitcher of all time.

Only going to pick from those I have seen pitch.
Have to go with Nolan Ryan. To do what he did, for as long as he did it is unbelievable. The guy is a model for pitching mechanics. AND, you best not charge the mound (Robin Ventura)

i would have to say any of the older pitchers (ie Cy Young, Walter Johnson, et al) have to be considered a little bit more than today's pitchers.. i say this because there werent any of the specialty pitchers (setup, middle relief, closer) that are prevalent in today's game- that meant that the starter often finished what they started - not only that, there werent 5-man rotations, 12-man stafs.. i would have to say it would be Walter Johnson or Cy Young for greatest pitcher in history

ERA can be a misleading stat as well so I wouldn't use that as a big stick in bashing Ryan If there was a pitcher I want to put out there in a game 7 situation it would be Nolan Ryan.

Same thing goes for Jack Morris in the 80s. Everybody judges him on his high ERA now and thats what's keeping him from the HOF. I think that's kinda stupid because he did give up a lot of runs but when the game was on the line you could count on Morris to keep his team in the game.

You've got a point. I was going to figure out his WHIP, but got caught up in actual work. I'll try to do that tonight, but have a feeling it won't be very good.

IMO, if I had to pick a game 7 starter, it would be a Bob Gibson, Walter Johnson, Satchel Paige etc... I don't know. I guess a lot of the time I tend to favor the older players and feel that they were superior to some of today's more modern stars. I might be right, but I might be wrong. Tough thing judging talent across different era's.

You've got a point. I was going to figure out his WHIP, but got caught up in actual work. I'll try to do that tonight, but have a feeling it won't be very good.
