I don't see how this trade helps LA, it seems like a downgrade. They lose their most reliable setup man, Paul Lo Duca was the spark for the Dodgers. Encarnacion and Choi are a wash. However, acquiring Brad Penny means 1)Alvarez will be rotated out of the rotation 2)another trade.

Re: First Big Trade
Not sure if this was such a good trade for the Dodgers. They lose their most reliable setup man and a leader in the clubhouse. Though, they're getting a good pitcher in return, a 1B with good potential and supposedly a good pitching prospect..
At least now, Mota will see Piazza more often. I'm sure he looks forward to pitching to him." I look at him and it's getting to the point where it's just scaring me. He looks younger but he doesn't carry himself in a younger manner. He's impressive, and I'm glad we drafted him. "

Re: First Big Trade
The Dodgers are hoping they can turn Brad Penny and a couple of prospects into Randy Johnson, but i doubt that will happen. Further more the other Johnson they tried to get today (C Charles Johnson) also has not decided whether to accept a trade to L.A.. If all this works out and the Dodgers get Randy and or Charles Johnson, then this move was not so bad, but if they can't get either of them then this might be the move that cost the Dodgers a trip to the playoffs.Comment

Re: First Big Trade
The Dodgers traded a 32 year old catcher, who while a good hitter was well into his 2nd half swoon. He's a good player, but his production as of late can be dublicated by a replacement such as Ross, or maybe Charles Johnson if that happens.
In Mota, they traded a great set-up man, but he is 30 years old. Not bad, but if I'm not mistaken he'll probably be making a good chunk of money next year. The Dodgers have a young flame thrower in AAA I think who could fill that role. In fact, I THINK he was aquired from the Yankees. His last name is Brazoban, first name I think is Yhency. Can anyone confirm he came from the Yanks?
Encarnacion was a failure as a Dodger, actually the Dodgers are blessed to have traded him.
Basically they get some younger, cheaper players, which also helps them next year so that they can sign Beltre and Gagne, so it also helps them in that matter. I thought they could have been fine without the deal but eh, whatever. Whats done is done and I dont see them being better or worse really.
For a pitcher who's been complaining about elbow pain for the last month, Penny sure has been awfully effective in that span:
July 28: 5 IP, 2 ER
July 23: 6 IP, 2 ER
July 18: 5 IP, 1 ER
July 10: 6 IP, 2 ER
Not too shabby. Sure he didnt pitch many innings but he didnt give up much runs, and the Dodger pen is good enough that 6 innings is really all the starters need to go. If they can go into the 7th, it's a bonus. The Dodger pen still has enough depth, though not as much as it did.
With Choi the Dodgers get a young player who is cheap and under their control for quite a few years. He has a good OBP, though he K's quite a bit. He has some power which is something the Dodgers needed. He is a better option than Encarnacion, thats for sure.
The Dodgers helped their rotation which now looks like:
Penny
Perez
Weaver
Ishii
Lima
Alvarez will move back to the bullpen which helps them more there with Mota gone. Supposedly Nomo is throwing well in bullpen sessions but I dont think he should pitch again this year.
The Marlins filled their needs as well, getting a good catcher and a great set-up man. Basically, both teams got what they needed and dealt from their strenghts, cant go wrong either way.Comment
