    Giants Claims Mesa

The Giants has been awarded a waiver claim to Jose Mesa of the Pirates. Its been reported that both the Cubs and Giants has put in claims for him but the Giants were awarded the claim due to an inferior record. Some sources say the Giants claimed Mesa just to block the Cubs from claiming him but nobody knows for sure because waiver claims cannot be discussed

This means nothing. The Pirates aren't likely to let him go without getting something in return. Unless, of course, the Giants are willing to hammer out a deal for him. I think they were just trying to keep him from the Cubs.

The story I heard in PGH was that a trade to the Cubs for Mesa was in the works, but since it's passed the trade deadline, he had to pass through waivers. The Giants blocked the trade and the Pirates are likely to pull him back off waivers.

So like Sully said, it means nothing.

The Pirates are probably going to want something hefty in return, Mesa's cheap and the Pirates have no real alternatives. I agree with Sully and joeboo, this means very little and nothing will probably happen.

I don't know how much they'll really want in return. You have to think of it this way: The Pirates are going nowhere, and he's a free agent after this year. The money that he's going to want next year will not allow the Pirates to sign him. So basically, they have him for another month of a meaningless season. If they can get an above average prospect for him (one that projects into a nice roleplayer at the major league level), I'd go for it.

Rumor has it that Mesa wants to stay in PGH and won't ask for much to do so. He's said he enjoys the city/team. He's also been a great influence on many of the Buc's young pitchers so I can see why the Pirates might want to keep him.

To add to that, Mesa wants to stay a closer. I doubt he'll be much more than a setup man on any other team.

Yea but the Pirates are a young team and they are still in a position where they could get to .500 which would be HUGE for them. Considering they have no one to step in who step in right away who has experience closing. The Pirates aren't giving in down the stretch, they are going hard to get back to .500 and I don't think they would want to give up Mesa and put more pressure on the team.

Thats a great point. Mesa could maybe close on a handful of teams today, but not too many. I think Pitt might be the perfect city for Mesa. He thrives under a relaxed atmosphere. In Philly, he would have stretches where he'd be lights out for 7-8 games in a row, and once he had a bad outing, look out. He's just not that strong mentally.
