Anyone remember the Barry Bonds World Series MAMMOTH home run?

I remember watching this game. I was in a hospital with my ex-wife who was doing some research project. We were just about to leave and Bonds was about to come up to bat, so I asked her to give me a minute because I wanted to watch Bonds' at bat. And to this day, I'm glad I didn't miss that at bat! He hit a home run the likes of which I've never seen in my life. The funny thing was, no one made a big deal about it. In fact, it seemed like the announcers were intentionally trying to downplay it, as if it wasn't some Ruthian feat. Mind you, this was before steroids became an issue, so perhaps they were TOLD to intentionally downplay it so as to minimize the attention to it. Anyway, here's a video of the home run, fast forward to about 3:45 to see the beginning of the at bat:

If the video doesn't embed, here's the link to it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDDcJndvvQ0

And here's a VERY interesting read on the home run that baseball doesn't want you to remember:

The cat was out the bag on October 20th, 2002 at approximately 11:53 pm central daylight time. In a sudden enlightening moment, we the sports fans realize we had been duped. Naively oblivious to the strange game baseball had become. As long as it remained exciting, the fan turned his cheek. Nothing was suspicious about every single season home run record being smashed between 1998 and 2001.

That was until Barry Bonds dug into the batters box in the 9th inning of Game 2 during the 2002 World Series.

Sorry to those Griffey goofs, but no swing is better than that one right there.

However, this was probably the most entertaining at-bat I've ever seen:

I try to remember the Pirates Barry, not the left coast Barry.
        Especially the '91-'92 Bonds Pirates.

Re: Anyone remember the Barry Bonds World Series MAMMOTH home run?

Meh, I said what I said.

Anyway, I'm friends with his son on FB and he just posted a link to an interview he had about daddy with Jeff Pearlman (the Love Me, Hate Me author). He had some interesting things to say.

J.P.: I’m gonna be honest, Niko. I believe your dad cheated in baseball and shouldn’t be listed as the all-time home run king. Even if steroids and PED weren’t banned in the Major League Baseball rule books, they were illegal in America without proper medical prescriptions. It’s just how I feel, though I can certainly be swayed. You’ve stated that you believe in your father. So why am I wrong here?

N.B.: There are so many reasons why he will always be the home run king. But everybody is entitled to their own opinion. Here is mine. My dad’s job was what exactly? To entertain. That’s it. That’s the first reason. Second is, as you said, he didn’t break any rules of the game. So what did he do wrong? Third, Hank Aaron admitted to greenies. An enhancer. Babe Ruth drank during prohibition. Illegal. Ty Cobb beat a woman during a game. What we are talking about is someone who is enhancing his performance within the rules of the sport he plays to entertain the rest of this world … and he is getting crucified for it.

It’s like Michael Jackson. His entire life he entertained and wanted to be loved by the people. Once that was taken from him what did he have left? My father did nothing wrong but play the game he loved to the best of his ability. So is he wrong for that? I would hope not. Everybody tries to say you’re a bad influence on the kids. How? My dad isn’t the one out there marketing steroids or putting them on the news. That’s the media installing it into the minds of the people. If nobody ever said anything people would continue to train. Continue to get education on substances that are good and bad for you. And continue to strive to be just like the greats who gave them hope and faith that they can be there, too.

Really, think about it. We are talking about a record of a sport. Does it really matter all that much? If the world wants it they can have it. The record doesn’t bring happiness. It’s a number. But if you strip my dad of it, everyone who did something that we don’t agree with has to get his/her biggest achievement taken also.

Now does it still matter that much?

Although as a fan I'm going to be on the same side of the fence as Niko, I'm not really taking the "everybody else was doing it" stance he threw out there.

I remember being so bitter about those two teams in the WS. That was a hell of a HR. Griffey and Bonds, two best swings ever.

I'll never forget that homer as long as I live. It still blows my mind. Un****ingbelievable. That one and the Pujols one off Lidge.
