I'm loving Shelby and it was a great trade because Heyward would be gone after this season while we have Shelby for several more seasons. I love moreso how he pitches. He's pitching around 92-93 but threw 3 straight 97s to Giancarlo to strike him out in one AB -- that's perfect pitching...throw at a comfy level and max out only when needed.
I wasn't taking about steals at all. Those Manny Ramirez-esque basernning blunders the other night was what I was referring to. This guy was so hyped to the moon and has been so mediocre offensively. This kid is 6'5" and 245 lbs. He should be slugging the hell out of the ball, but he can't. A sub .400 SLG from a guy his size and his prospect status is inexcusable.

He is a ridiculously good defender though, I'll give him that.

Heyward cost the Cardinals the game yesterday when he was on 2nd and only advanced to third on a double...completely misread it and would have been the winning run.

I love Heyward's potential and I was pissed when we traded him, but I can't argue with what Miller is doing and love having a horse on the mound like him.

I still think Chipper messed his swing up in 2011; that or the thumb injury drastically affected him.

Astros complete four game sweep of Toronto. Couldn't find a broom with a Blue Jays logo so I'll have to go with this:

Another terrible zone in a Cubs game:

I think about 3/4 of those right-side triangles were called strikes to Soler.

Out of the elite prospects Jason Heyward is definitely one of the most disappointing players in recent years. And the fact that he is on one of my fantasy teams has no bear on my bitterness

That's pretty much what I was getting at. This guy was once the #1 prospect in baseball and he flat out can't hit. He has everything going for him and just can't figure it out.

The odd thing is a player should grow in knowledge of the strike zone as the mature. Heyward has seen his walk rate decrease each year...from his rookie year at 14% down to this year at 7%. I still believe he can turn into a superstar (heck, he's only 26), but he hasn't shown the ability to make adjustments that are crucial to development at the MLB level.

Ah well. Still a great homestand. Get rested up with the day off tomorrow, Cubbies.

I kind of feel like that's a bit of a rash move. Redmond is a younger guy IIRC and he and this roster can grow together but I understand the pressures involved. They have a window of opportunity until Stanton's opt out clause and must make the most of it.

The judgments I've seen about Heyward here are pretty harsh.

Yeah, the bat has been a disappointment, but he's been an above-average hitter in his career, and when combined with his baserunning and defense amounts to a very good overall player: +4.3 WAR per year during his 5 seasons with the Braves. #16 in MLB during that period in total WAR among position players, which is certainly a much better track record than Shelby Miller accumulated during that period.

If Shelby Miller can turn into Matt Cain 2.0 (another guy who consistently beats his peripherals by inducing weak contact), then the trade will work out for both teams.
