    Scrap the MVP award!!

After reading the "Ichiro for MVP?" thread I got to thinking how flawed the MVP system is. No player on a losing team should even be CONSIDERED for the award. Whats valuable about a player that is part of a losing team. If he's on the team and you lose... you'll certainly be doing the same without him.

Unfortunately that's unfair to players on bad teams that put up great numbers. That why the MVP should be scrapped and a "Player of the Year" type award should be given out. Maybe a "Babe Ruth Award" or something. Or you could just have that in addition to the MVP.

This way writers don't have to be criticized for picking the bets player in the game....even when he's not helping his team.

    Anyone else agree?

I agree, they should just call it player of the year. But I really do feel Ichiro should be MVP(player of the year). You cant screw him just because his team sucks. He's going out there and doing something that is so rare these days. I actually dont think hes getting enough credit, because a lot of people like to just look at homeruns. What Ichiro is doing is just simply amazing. Just like A-rod proved its obvious no 1 man can carry a team to the playoffs or even to a good record in baseball. Its not Ichiros fault that hes surrounded by garbage right now in seattle. He's valuable in the sense where if he wasnt on this crappy mariner team instead of having 51 wins they'd probably have like 20-30. The special thing about Ichiro is not only is he the best hitter in the game, hes also one of the top defensive players too.

                Hank Aaron Award

This coveted honor is awarded annually to the best overall offensive performer in both the American League and National League. Originally introduced in 1999 to honor the 25th anniversary of Hank Aaron breaking Babe Ruth's all-time home run record, the Hank Aaron Award was the first major award to be introduced in 30 years.

They already have an award like that. Although it usually goes to the player with the highest total of HR/RBI/R etc.

Player of the Year should honor Defen sive and offensive acheivments not like the Hank Aaron award for offense only

Hank Aaron Award gets absolutely no media coverage and is not done the right way. They have fans vote for 1 guy per team.... then MLB and Century 21 vote for 5 of those guys from each league... an the fans vote on the winner.

We just need something to replace the MVP...but by using the same format with the writers voting.

There is a Player of the Year Award.

The players vote for the guy.

It doesn't get a lot of press, but if you read a sports magazine or mlb.com or a similar news magazine, you'll see the run down of award winners after every season.

Just so you know...Alex Rodriguez was voted by his peers as the American League Player of the Year in 2003 - the sixth of his career. Pujols was named the NL Player of the Year.

edit: Don't confuse this with the Sporting News Player of the Year Award, which was won by Albert Pujols in 2003. Alex Rodriguez won in 2002.
