I hope so. The only problem is that it will be replaced by the simpleminded mocking of "Cardinal Way" which, in my opinion, is just as annoying. See Deadspin for an example.

Nope, the most annoying thing is all the "you're just jealous", "Can't beat us, call the FBI" (an actual sign at the game today), etc. reactions that are flying around.

The fan base deserves all the mocking in the world today. Feel bad for the good fans that get lumped in with the idiots, but that's how it goes.

I'm not trying to be rude/immature about it, but the whole "classiest fans/organization" mantra have set the Cardinals up for ridicule after this debacle.

If the Cardinals gleaned legitimate information from this hack, this could be the biggest team punishment in modern sports history.

That would mean fine of over $500,000, I think. This was the punishment given to the Saints for Bountygate.

            Re: Cardinal-Gate?

This post probably won't help, but being a Cardinal fan myself, I'm just tired of hearing both sides of "The Cardinal Way." That's all.

(I actually had a pretty good rebut/bellyaching/whiny post here, but I'm taking my own advice and shutting up. )

I totally understand why other fans will enjoy this grand opportunity for schadenfreude. When I was younger, I know I would greatly enjoy a ripping of the Ravens or the Cubs.

The Cardinals are looking at possible jail time in federal prison for the people involved and compensation to the Astros, along with the punishments that organizations have usually gotten for misconduct (fines, loss of draft picks, etc.).

A commenter pointed out on Fangraphs that Sarah Palin's email hacker got a year in prison + probation for hacking into her personal email account. The Cardinals might have stolen trade secrets. That's much, much worse.

Oh yea I know it's worse than that. And this punishment will be worse than a 500K fine. But I was just looking in the sports realm.

Great collection of reactions to this.

After news broke Tuesday that the FBI is investigating the St. Louis Cardinals organization for possibly hacking into a Houston Astros database of player information, the Internet had some a lot of fun at the Cardinals' expense.

MLB will do what they can to protect the Cards in this for sure. Look for them to find this was a small isolated incident involving a few low level staffers, with top guys being unaware. They don't want this to be bigger than that.

I'm hearing the Cardinals got Astros stats, in addition to scouting reports & player transactions. What, they couldn;t go to Baseball Reference to find the stats they wanted?

This is an FBI investigation. And I would like to think that the new Commish would be smart enough to avoid, you know, obstruction of justice.

This case boils down to one team stealing from another.

There are 29 other teams in the league that won't appreciate a light punishment being handed down. Manfred will definitely have the heat turned on him by the owners to do something big assuming the evidence warrants a huge punishment.

No need to obstruct justice, but he can frame it in a way that protects his league and that franchise. Sounds like people in the organization somehow had access to passwords to Houston's database. I'm guessing people will be fired/prosecuted, and that's it. Just a few rogues out for revenge.
