    Re: 8/31 - 9/13 Game Discussion Thread

I think sometimes we add too much weight to the first 2 to 400 ABs. The general rule of thumb (at least from the old time scouts) is that to properly evaluate a player you have to wait til the first 1000 ABs of their career. In other words we can't always take the first few months or even first full season to say "hey that guy's gonna be amazing" or "That guy doesn't look so great".

We've been spoiled by so much elite talent coming up that when we see a high level prospect come up and look shaky we tend to discard them and look for the next big star. Baseball is a game of failure and adjustment. In other words, I dunno if Buxton is going to flame out or not but let's practice some patience here.

Absolutely...Buxton very well may end up being a stud. I am speaking more to in what world does anyone watch these two play RIGHT NOW and think Buxton is Sano's equal? I'm so much surprised at Buxton's performance as I am the hype that has followed him.

I don't get what's not to understand regarding his hype. He absolutely tore up every level of the minor leagues.

Not saying he shouldn't be hyped, but to be called the #1 prospect in baseball is crazy IMO. I've literally been reading about this guy for three years as if he would be the next Trout...he might blow up next year (even Trout struggled in 2011), but it's hard to see it given his current approach at the plate and body type.

lol exactly. Eric Hinske,Angel Berroa,Bobby Crosby ect. had great first 700 or so plate appearances in their careers, it's why they won rookie of the year.

Hinske beat out Lackey. Berroa beat out Teixeira. Crosby beat out Greinke.

And lets not forget Dontrelle Willis. Who won rookie of the year over Jose Reyes and Miguel Cabrera, and had 4 great years but then completely fell apart.

Beginning of careers might go one way, but obviously takes time to really evaluate how well a guy will do in the league.

Well this came before Luvollo said Hanley wasn't going to play LF anymore. So that means he's going to first. And my plan for Panda was at first. But now he could go to DH with Hanley playing 1B

Goldy just lined into a triple play in Colorado. If Reyes wanted to he could have made it an unassisted...

Flipping between Braves/Marlins, Yanks/Sox, and Phils/Mets...come back to Mets/Phils and its 5-0. What happened!?

This guy cannot concentrate with the pressure on if he and his families lives depended on it.
They question Colon and whether he should be on the playoff roster?.....IDGAF if Jon Niese has TWO left arms .......adios.
