    Ichiro wont make it

Seems like Ichiro wont be able to break the record as he seems to be in a hitting slump now.

    Thoughts?

he needs to average like 2 hits/game the rest of the way. great run, but i don't think he makes it.

Well, he's still on pace for 259, which would break the record. But if every team is gonna walk him like the Angels did last night, he won't stand a shot.

I can understand walking him in a clutch situation but to give him the Bonds treatment is just dumb. I doubt teams INT BB'ed Sisler but then again it was a different era. If Ichiro makes it then i'll definately be a greater accomplishment then Sisler's

Just looked at Sislers stats during that year. He definately didn't walk much. I was also surprised at how good his stats were (BB/K ratio is in credible). Check these out:

                        AB - 631
                        R - 137
                        BA - .407
                        HR - 19
                        RBI - 122
                        K - 19
                        BB - 46
                        SB - 42
                        OBP - .449
                        SLG - .632

I'd also be surprised to see teams walk Ichiro. It doesn't make much sense to me. Walking Bonds is one thing, but walking Ichiro? I don't know...

Actually, the walks last night were completely justified. Remember, Ichiro is their BEST hitter right now (hell, best hitter in the AL). And the Angels are still in both the division and WC races, so their first priority is to WIN. And if walking Ichiro gets them the win, they're completely justified in doing so.

                            Let's take a look at Ichiro's AB's last night.

                            Bottom 1st, score 0-0.
Non-intentional walk. I doubt Sele wanted to put him on for free. It was an 8 pitch AB.

                            Bottom 2nd, score 1-0 (mariners), men on 2nd and 3rd, 2 outs.
Intentional walk. Absolutely justified. If Ichiro gets a hit, probably 3-0 Mariners, but the Angels get out of it as Winn struck out.

                            Bottom 4th, 1-1, man on 2nd, 2 outs.
Intentional walk. Debatable, but I still think justified considering the next man grounded out.

Bottom 7th, 2-1 (angels), leading off
Grounded out. See, now they have the lead, they pitch to him.

Bottom 9th, 6-1 (angels), none on, 2 outs.
pitch to him and he gets on via error by erstad. once again, now that the angels are comfortably ahead, they pitch to him.

i don't think ichiro is getting the bonds treatment. the angels are in the playoff race, and they didn't want to get beat by ichiro. now, if the royals start intentionally walking him, then i'd be pissed.
