    Expanded Rosters

A debate I heard today(and other times in the past) brought up on TV regarding expanded rosters. So some see expanded rosters as abit of an escape for the bad managed teams and teams using it as a bail out in a way during September. How the rules suddenly change for the most important month in the season. And then go back to the way they were before that once the playoffs begin(where it's 25 man roster, and none of those guys can be the callups from the 40 man roster in September)

For bad teams, it's a way to get some AAA/AA guys up to see what they can do in the majors without having to burn any option. For good teams, it's a way to maybe bail out some weaknesses in the season. So if you need a pinch runner in a late situation, your main roster might not have a great runner, but you got a guy from the expanded rosters callups who is big on speed, you can just put him in.

Players reasoning for hating it was kinda weak though, saying expanded rosters meant less space in lockerroom/dugouts and eating before/after games took more time cause these new guys would sometimes go and take food before the regulars and things like that. Possibly throwing off chemistry the regular 25 man roster had.

Do people here like it or hate it? Or at least would want changes in it?

Some suggestions I heard about expanded rosters would be:
1.No expanded rosters, just play September like you do April-August and playoffs.

2.Expanded rosters, but make it like NHL where you're only allowed to dress a certain number of a guys a series(so you might carry 40,but can only dress 25 a series, but each series can switch which 25 you dress,so in other words,if you want to give a guy 3 days off,or know a starter won't be pitching that series,he's scratched from that series which frees up a space on that roster)

3.Expanded rosters, but not 40 guys. Maybe an extra batter + pitcher(so 27 total), or 30 at most?

I've always been on record as being against it. I hate the fact that meaningful games are played with what are essentially spring training rosters. For me, a good compromise is that you can have 40 guys up, but on any given day only 25 can be "active" and used in the game.

Another argument against expanded rosters is that with the extra WC, more teams are in the playoff race obviously, meaning less will be having nothing to play for.

So less teams will be putting out some minor league guy to see what he got and basically seeing what they might have for next season.

Out of all the possible changes, the fixed 25 man roster per series thing is the one I liked the most. Doubt MLB will ever consider changing the september callups/40 man roster stuff though.

Maybe I'm missing something but what is the argument?

Who cares if less teams are using more players. How does that negatively impact anyone?

I don't see a problem with it. Every team gets 40 players so I don't really see how it's unfair.

            Soccer: FC Dallas, Fleetwood Town
            NCAA: SMU, UTA

Well one way you can look at it as being unfair is teams out of contention throwing their younger pitchers and play younger players to give them a look against teams that are still in the race against other teams who may not being playing a teams JV.

It's a bit of a reach but the competition isn't as level this time of year as it is throughout the season and this is a pretty crucial stretch.
