The Dodgers had a six game lead over the Giants on September 11th. They now only hold a half game lead over S.F. with six head-to-head games remaining with them.
To add to their misery, Brad Penny left the game against the Padres in the fourth inning because of his right arm. If memory serves me correctly Tracy said they were going to shut Penny down for the rest of the year if he had any setbacks with his arm after straining his bicep nearly a month ago.
The Dodgers staff is now made up of Jose Lima, Wilson Alvarez (this is the most innings he's thrown in four seasons), two .500 pitchers in Weaver and Perez, and a guy who walks nearly five guys every nine innings in Ishii. Not to mention that Nomo has been pitching so poorly he's been demoted to the bullpen.
This is like one of those accidents you see happening in slow motion and there's nothing you can do to stop it.
The only question that really remains is whether or not they'll be able to hang on to the Wild Card spot or will the Cubs over take them for that as well.
If they crash this hard this late in the season, I can't see DePodesta surviving the LoDuca/Mota for Penny/Choi trade this off-season.
