Lee Mazzilli offers solution to O's vs 'Spos...

If and when Major League Baseball announces the Expos move to Washington D.C. The Orioles Manager said he would like to see the Orioles moved to the National League and the Expos (or whatever they will be called) moved to the American League. The Orioles have been an American League team since moving from St.Louis in 1954. In an interview before yesterdays game with the Tigers Mazzilli mentioned how the Milwaukee Brewers moved from the A.L. to the N.L. in 1998, a move that fans in Milwaukee seemed to embrace. The Orioles two biggest draws are the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox, a move to the N.L. means they would only be able to play those teams during inter-league play, Mazzilli suggests that the Orioles would be a rival with the Philadelphia Phillies in the N.L. East, and could also create a rivalry with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

It's uncertain to say but, i'm not sure how Baltimore fans would react to such a move, i mean why would you want to see the Red Sox or Yankees when you could see the Phillies and Pirates?.

Orioles fans feel free to respond.

On a side note, the move would not be surprise for Washington as both incarnations of the Washington Senators were American League teams (of course, both teams ended up leaving), maybe three will be their lucky number.

Mazzilli just wants out of the AL East. No Yanks and Sox means, more nights of sleep.

I agree with phattferd. The Orioles would love to be out of the same division as the Yanks and BoSox. I know Angelos spends bucket loads of money but the Yanks and BoSox will always outspend. The competition in the NL East isn't as strong as in the AL and so the O's could see some improvement by the move.

I remember a few yrs ago the Jays were lobbying to move to the AL Central because of the high spending teams in their division. It makes geographical sense but the Jays rivals in the Central aren't as strong as they used to be and there would be less incentive for the fans here.

There's no way Angelo$$$ will get out of the AL East. Boston and NY brings in so much money. We sell out those games vs. the two teams, and since Angelo$$$ is about the money, we'll stay.

                    rubisco has a point.

From what I read Selig offered Angelos that solution, as well as another one (dropping the Orioles and taking over the new Washington/Virginia franchise).

Angelos rejected both offers and the one with the move included a huge lump sum of money. Money that an anonymous source said is so unbelievable that it is amazing that Angelos (Mr. Money himself) rejected it.

And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

I need the Expos to move to DC and play in the N.L. so I can see my Cubs play here in DC instead of only back home in Chicago.
