What has happened to Derek Lowe?

Every time he pitches, he is getting blasted. His last couple of performances have got to be making Boston fans nervous.

I think he has had a hard time with dealing with the pressure of playing for a contract, he's trying really hard and some games he looks like the Derek Lowe we have seen in the last 2 years and in other games he looks awful. Hope he gets it turned around because the Sox are going to need him in the playoffs, i think he will likely be in the Bullpen at least in the first round. if he does not get it together i'm not sure the Red Sox will try to hard to re-sign him this winter.

        I get it.

He really needs to improve if the Red Sox are going to make a run in the playoffs.

Re: What has happened to Derek Lowe?

He had his one good year because guys were in familiar with facing him as a starter. He also mixed in more breaking balls with his sinker that year which he has drifted away from. Now hitters know to wait on that sinker because a lot of the time it won't even be called a strike if they take it. And when he is forced to come over the plate he's going to get hit because he leaves the ball up in the zone.

I think with some confidence and a better change-up he could get back to where he was. Right now his sinker is anywhere from 88-90 miles an hour and his change-up is 82-83 which isn't a large enough differential to throw a hitter off.

As a Boston fan though, I can't say I'm really worried about him in the playoffs because I don't think he'll start. Bronson Arroyo has been very effective this year and I think he and Wakefield (who has great post season numbers) can get the job done behind Pedro and Schilling. And Derek Lowe can he effective in relief if he is needed because he can induce a ground ball in a key situation. I think Boston's main priority in the playoffs will be the get a win in the first game against Santana (assuming the standings hold true). And if that doesn't happen then Pedro (assuming Schilling is the game 1 starter) needs to step up and beat Radke and put the team into a position where they only need one win out of the combined efforts of Arroyo and Wakefield.

boston is looking good with schilling and martinez (as long as martinez is taken out before the 8th inning). and their offense is pretty good, but they look good every year, and i still think the cards are better.
Just wait till Arsenal moves into Emirates Stadium.

Pedro out before the 8th inning? *laughs* more like the 6th. He's gone long some innings this year. He's pitched more innings this year than last, but still when the 6th gets around, Pedro starts thinking about Happy Hour and the 7th inning stretch.

                        Derek Lowe...
At least you know what you'll get with him when he's out there.
As RSOX said, it's pressure. I think he's confidence took a nose dive too with Shilling coming in. Lowe went from #2 to #3. The playing in a contract year thing doesn't help either.
If Boston lets him go as a free agent, I won't be suprised. I hope Lowe does well where ever he ends up.

Arrayo. This guy scares me when he's out there. You don't know if he's going to give you those 5 shutout innings or 6 runs in the first.

MLB Extra Innings has been awesome. I've been watching the redsox for the past 3yrs from Raleigh, NC. I've seen more games here than I did up in MA. It's crazy. I've seen pieces of practically every televised game they've had for the past 3yrs. I hope some of you guys that haven't gotten this package on cable or satalite do. Granted a lot of free time is wasted. At least it's wasted well.

The strange thing is, he was lights out in spring training. Once the regular season started he stunk. It seems like his control isnt there anymore for some reason. He leaves his sinker up in the zone and that two seam fastball that was so effective last year is all over the place.
