Regardless of how any of us feel about him outside of work it does matter. He is a PR nightmare.

Like it or not if you are in the limelight and say things that cause a stir (for whatever reason) your employer will not be happy about it. This is not unique to ESPN (we had an 18 year tenured and very popular news anchor here in Pittsburgh get fired for something she said on Facebook).

It's easy for us to sit here and say we don't care what he does in his off time but the reality of it is that there are people that do care whether that's right or wrong.

Oh I understand that, I was just stating that I don't care what he does. But I am know why and was not surprised at all to see he was fired. If I was the head at ESPN I would fire him too because like you said he is a PR disaster. I was shocked to check my Twitter and see people being pissed at ESPN for firing him. I get that he has the right to feel and say what he wants but the company also has the right to fire him over this stuff.

No one would care what he thought if he would just shut up about it. I think it was here someone mentioned Smoltz is probably as conservative and feels the same way but he just keeps his mouth shut because it's not for the public to know.

Schilling was a great analyst, one of the best at ESPN. He will get a job elsewhere, probably at FS1.

Didn't like his analysis one bit. Sadly, many of the former "greats" aren't nearly as good as the bush leaguers.

He's trash because of a tweet or two?

No, to me, he's trash because of his business venture and how he put the entire state of Rhode Island in financial jeopardy. You can't make this stuff up. How many people can say they did this to a state? All of his "views" on things are really secondary, even though I think his views are more than a little small-minded and he's had more than fair warning to adapt to his situation.

My thoughts on Facebook and Twitter are as follows:

It's not a private conversation. It's public. It's a bullhorn. It's a megaphone. It's a press conference. Would you be comfortable with your mom, wife/GF, kids, pastor, or boss reading what you post? Would you say these things in person? If not, don't post it (or at the very least, restrict access so that only friends/followers can see what you post).

Live events would be the only reason to watch that garbage network, and even then they do such a horrible job with their production it's not even worth watching.

I only watch ESPN for their live games. Nothing else on that network to watch except maybe the 30 for 30 series'.

Only good thing about the Yankee game was the great beer selection out in the bleachers.

I wasn't defending Schilling as in he shouldn't have been fired, I just think it's a little ridiculous to call him trash because his views are different from your own. It's clear as day as to why he got fired, no one is arguing the firing of it on here that I know of. I'm just not going to call someone trash for their political opinions. That's all I was saying.

Maybe people shouldn't be offended as easily?

Either way, no point in derailing this thread anymore. It's the best time of the year, we shouldn't let his dumb decisions take center stage over all of the games going on.
