Every hitter loses the ball in the last little bit to the bat. Your eyes can't track the ball fast enough to actually see it off the barrel.

As the ball approaches past a 45 degree angle, it is more difficult to "keep your eye on the ball" as your eyes need to shift through many more degrees of movement. Research reported by Stadler shows that hitters cannot watch the entire flight of the ball, so they employ two tactics.

First, they might follow the path of the ball for 70-80% of its flight, but then their eyes can't keep up and they estimate or extrapolate the remaining path and make a guess as to where they need to swing to have the bat meet the ball. In this case, they don't actually "see" the bat hit the ball. Second, they might follow the initial flight of the ball, estimate its path, then shift their eyes to the anticipated point where the ball crosses the plate to, hopefully, see their bat hit the ball.
Ted Williams , arguably the greatest baseball hitter of all-time, once said, "I think without question the hardest single thing to do in sport is to hit a baseball". Williams was the last major league player to hit .400 for an entire season and that was back in 1941, 67 years ago! In th

Stanton was like the Vince Carter of the HRD. Not only put on an all time great show, but the intensity of it too just put things over the top. Everyone impressed not just by the dunks VC did, but how aggressive he threw the ball down while doing those dunks. Similar with Stanton today, he didn't just hit alot of home runs, he hit them HARD.

Can't imagine what it might be like in future HRDs, maybe guys even throwing their names into the HRD, wanting to compete. That's the one thing the NBA dunk contest has lacked, the big name guys entering.

No no, I know. His eyes certainly lose the ball much earlier though is all I was saying. Slow-mo shots confirm that much, at least.

          Fun derby.

Really want to see Trout, Bryce, Bryant, and Machado in this.

I think last night proved that the baseballs are definitely juiced this year. I'm not taking anything away from what happened as that takes a lot of skill and power but still....This is just lunacy.

That'd create quite a spectacle that MLB would love, especially with Stanton presumably defending his title back in Miami next year. Probably won't happen

Very happy for Stanton to kind of put himself on the map especially with the way injuries have ruined his last 2 phenomal seasons. I'm not used to the Marlins being semi relevant right now, it's been a big L since 2004

What time exactly will the game itself begin? Not talking pregame talk or intros/anthems or anything, but actual first pitch time.

I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

I mean it was really just Stanton who was hitting CRAZY far homeruns. All the other guys were just hitting "regular homeruns". I don't think Frazier hit one much farther than 440...not that that isn't an absolute bomb...but i think all the others were in pretty realistic ranges.

Just to clarify...do you mean the HRD balls? or the balls they use in all the games?

Yeah like Stanton had 20 of the top 21 homers in terms of distance at the derby. So I don't think any statement can be made on different balls
