5 Years for $100 MIL...? I doubt Beltran will get THAT much (unless its from Steinbrenner). Pujols just signed that 7 year, $100 MIL contract and he's one of the very few guys that I think deserves that kind of cash. I've watched him a lot this year and I'd venture to say he's the best young hitter with the brightest future I've ever seen. As for Sosa, it seems I've heard everywhere that if the Cubs traded him the organization would be subject to some rediculous amount payable to Mr. Strikout (Sosa). And about Alou, I guess he may have a temper and what not, but I think most of the Cubs were frustrated the whole year. I wish Prior would have gone ahead and had Tommy John's surgery this year, but no one can predict the future to know if its going to be a good or bad season, unless you're the Expos.
I'm just concerned about the following...
Sosa returning and playing the majority of the time would result in many more problems and would hurt the team tremendously, both off the field and especially on the field. I know everyone talks about how fans are quick to change their tune and love a player one year and hate him the next. Such is the case with Sammy. I loved Sammy in 1998 with the home run race and he did some great things, no doubt. But when athletes are paid millions and millions of dollars per year, fans like us have the luxury of being fickle and hating these players based on their performance. So, Sammy, I'm glad you'll go into the Hall of Fame as a Cub, but sorry, you're out of your prime and I hope he's gone next year.
I have a bad feeling about Prior getting injured next year. Maybe its just me going by Murphy's Law, but all that talk about possible Tommy John surgery last year had me thinking. I figured Prior wanted to put off the surgery if at all possible because this year was, by far, the most promising year for the Cubs in a long, long time.
