Pitchers make the team because of their pitching talent.

Batters make the team because of batting and fielding talent.

Someone who can do all three is nearly impossible to find.

Many batters/fielders were once pitchers such as Mark McGwire

If you can hit well then you will likely find a position to play everyday so your bat can be used more effectively. Pitchers who can hit have to be extremely better at pitching or it would be a waste to not have them in the everyday lineup.

Once the decision is made for a pitcher to be a pitcher then the pitchers do not practice at batting as the everyday players do. Hitting is a matter of fractions of an inch in their swing.

Does this make sense?
