As I understand it MLB has not suspended a player for a violation of the collision rule since it was implemented.

I would like to know what is the reasoning behind this.

I would like to know what is the reasoning behind this.

They are in a weird limbo with this rule that will need to be thought through.

If they really want to protect catchers, then the rule has to be backed up with legitimate penalties beyond being out. Fines and suspensions.

However, as recently as 5 years ago, what Rizzo did would've been perfectly legal. And not only that, but he would've been lauded as a gritty gamer.

I think Torre is in a spot where he doesn't feel he can enforce this too strongly, but they also don't want to leave catchers out to be Ray Fosse'd.

In this specific instance, I agree that Rizzo was a little overzealous with the contact he made and have no problems with the out call based on a violation of the rule. But, on the other hand, a lot of fans are making it seem like Rizzo went and grabbed a butcher knife from the dugout and then brutally mauled Hedges. If Hedges didn't react so strongly (just a bruised leg?) this wouldn't really be an issue.

Torre needs to explain this ASAP, it can't be that he is waiting for a catcher to get injured to then suspend someone.

Unforunately that's probably what it will take. People are all hot and bothered over the Rizzo/Hedges thing because Hedges is a good player and it seemed like he might've been seriously hurt if you were watching that play in real time. The level of outrage tends to rise in proportion to the outcome/violence of the collision. Just like it'll take someone getting killed by being hit in the head for more people to adopt more protective helmets, or having more legs get broken by a sliding Chase Utley to institute slide rules.

It's more of it was brought up and Snitker only said "we can't rule anything out".

If he wants to give it a shot, I'd be curious to see how it goes. Having him and Adams in he lineup together sounds nice.

Meanwhile our defense will suddenly plummet. Freddie does have a good glove and a great arm but not the most range.

I have never seen an inning this terrible defensively from a professional team.
