Later, Leiter!

So it's pretty much a done deal according to reports here in NY that Leiter will not return the Mets.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm kinda indifferent about this one. On one hand Leiter was a leader in the clubhouse... on the other, he's getting up there in age, and I'm tired of the Mets having so many older players...

Seems like Minaya will be meeting with the agent of Carl Pavano, who has expressed interest. Radke and Milton are also possible players to be signed.

And from what I can tell, Leiter just seems like he will end up a Stankee. Makes sense given their history... I guess only time will tell.

Thoughts?

I doubt he'll be a Marlin. Reports say he wants to stay here in NYC.... hence the Stankees being a viable option, considering they're supposed to be matching the Marlins offer....

If Leiter wanted to sign for the $4mil we offered, that would have been cool. I do not want us to match the $7 mil offer he got.

I don't think Minaya does either. That's why they ended discussions and agreed to pursue "other interests."

They tried to match it with $4 mil and "incentive" bonuses, but apparently he wouldn't go for it.

I liked Al, but if this means that we could probably get into the Pavano biding then good luck Al. I think the Phillies will push hard for him.

While Al Leiter seems like a good guy he has no loyalty at all so in that way I don't see any problems with letting him go. I'm still a pit PO'ed over how he left Toronto. The guy was kept for years when he had blister problems and such then he suddenly blossoms into a good pitcher and leaves us with no thought to how the franchise risked a lot by keeping him.

Anyways he's getting up there in age but I think he has a couple good years left in him. It would be crazy to pay the guy 7 mil. plus.

While Al Leiter seems like a good guy he has no loyalty at all so in that way I don't see any problems with letting him go. I'm still a pit PO'ed over how he left Toronto. The guy was kept for years when he had blister problems and such then he suddenly blossoms into a good pitcher and leaves us with no thought to how the franchise risked a lot by keeping him.

I think this is good for both sides. The Mets need to get younger in the rotation and Leiter can sign with the Yankees or Red Sox and have another shot at a title. I think the first two guys the Mets should try to sign are Clement and Perez. Younger guys who have some upside left and have more electric stuff than Leiter.
