Re: 2017-2018 MLB Hot Stove Thread

Good read on the dynamics of the Marlins FO. Jeter is the face of the FO, but far from the one to blame.

In moving the reigning NL MVP to the Yankees so that he could shed Stanton’s hefty contract, Miami’s new owner Bruce Sherman isn’t rebuilding — he’s exploring new depths of bad faith. And Derek Jeter is taking the blame.

Sherman invited Jeter to join the rentier class—or at least feel like he was part of that exclusive club—in exchange for a 4 percent buy-in and one particular service: Jeter, as the team’s CEO, would look like he was in charge. Now he’s a well-paid human shield, like Roger Goodell for the NFL, soaking up public scorn while the men who wield real power soak in profit. The relationship between Jeter and Sherman is like the relationship between an occupying army and the local puppet ruler, or a mafia boss and his stooge.

No way he opts out as he's not getting this type of money in another deal.

Looks like Ian Kinsler will be traded within the week.

The Rays are also expected to trade some big names this week as well.

Actually, I didn't think that article came off well. It was just sort of a vehicle for venting righteous anger about Bruce Sherman and little more than that. I didn't notice any information/sourcing at all on how the Marlins' new front office actually operates.

Even if Jeter doesn't do much with the operation of the club he's such a public face for everything going on that he WILL be blamed or lauded for everything that happens. For the first time in his baseball life Jeter is going to get some real criticism hurled at him whether it's justified or not. It doesn't help that he is known for saying a lot but providing very little of substance. It can work as a ballplayer because you can charm the reporters that way but as an executive type it can come off as either being condescending or just frustrating beyond words. Certainly you can do that and be successful but it means admitting honesty. Alex Anthopoulos is a guy that can drive you up the wall if you want to learn what's going on in the front office but he'll always be honest and say why he won't give out any concrete information. I just don't think Jeter has that nuance down yet.

Anywho, the Toronto media is really pushing the idea that since the AL and specifically the East has gotten tougher that now would be the right time to trade Donaldson for youthful assets. We'll have to monitor that situation over the winter meetings I think.

I'm sure there's a lot of different opinions on this, but what's the popular consensus about Ohtani? If he was forced to choose, is he a better hitter than pitcher?
I heard one Japanese coach say that Ohtani likes pitching better, but is a better hitter.

I know Stanton has that big contract but Marlins still got fleeced big time.
The Marlins screwed this up from the jump. Why wouldn't they go to Stanton early on and ask which teams he would have accepted a trade to. Marlins got nothing. You have to ask yourself why they signed him for this kind of money knowing even Ruth and Gehrig couldn't fill that park.

I think he ends up as a pitcher down the road. This is not AAAA ball this is the bigs and you really cannot do both effectively.

The Hot Stove League was has slowly built up to a nice toasty temp. I really believe we're about to see it heat up even more now that the two big chips have fallen.

I love the Stanton move from a baseball fan standpoint, and illustrates my appreciation for MLB's economic system. I have seen and heard so much chatter everywhere (including my brother, good grief) about MLB needing a hard cap like the NFL. I say POO to that. If a team is dedicated enough to put the best team on the field, and willing to pay for it, then go for it! To the argument that it isn't fair to compete with the team willing to spend money...well life isn't fair, so find a way to compete.

Besides, as we see every October (and early November), the team that hoists the trophy is not the team with the two best sluggers, but the team that hits timely and pitches effectively.

One final thought, its funny how any Hot Stove move affects its fans; I bet there is this permanent smile plastered on every Yankee fan face right now, but as a Rockie fan, I'm smiling because Chris Ianetta is back in the fold.

the stanton deal is the second one in as many months George Steinbrenner would have been pleased to make (firing Girardi would have been the first).
this is the kind of outfield Steinbrenner envisioned when he got Dave Winfield from the Padres to go along with Reggie Jackson. But this tandem should be together for a good deal longer than Misters May and October. Winfield had to move to leftfield when he came over, it'll be interesting to see how Boone juggles Big Foot and All Rise. I expect each to get his fair share at DH.

                        Totally agree about the Cap.
I wanted one in the NHL and now I wish it didn't exist.
There is barely any player movement and top markets are handicapped from becoming dynasties.

I believe it's done more harm than good from an entertainment perspective.
The owners love it because franchise values have increased.
But it kind of sucks for fans who follow the league and not just one team.

To be fair to Jeter and his ownership group, they had nothing to do with Stanton's massive deal. It was going to be an issue one way or another no matter who bought the team from Loria.

One of the things that has happened in the NHL and it's already started to happen a bit in baseball is that the league has gotten a LOT younger. Older guys are either having to take less money than they would in the past or phased out of the game completely. Another aspect of the hard cap making things more difficult is that teams have been locking up their young talent so early on that free agency is filled mostly with older guys who only have one contract left in them while the true superstars are locked up long term with the team that drafted them.

True but Jeter could have gone to Stanton personally and asked him where he would go. They might have done better and avoided some of this embarrassment.
