The Braves trading for and cutting Adrian Gonzalez...you dudes remember back when Adrian Gonzalez was the #1 overall pick by the Marlins and then was a prospect in the Rangers' organization rumored to be in virtually every trade for every star player? Doesn't seem like that long ago. And now his career is pretty much over.

Well, he is 36 or so...and he's had a GREAT career. If every #1 overall pick had his career, teams would take that deal in a heart beat.

I don't think I was judging his career. I was commenting on the passage of time.

This was a big trade for salary reasons for LA. Allows them to avoid the Luxury Tax for 2019 before the big free agent class allowing them to keep Kershaw and go after someone else. And they could have up to $30 million to spend this year as well.

Good trade for Atlanta. It clears a spot for Acuna in 2018, and it gets Kemp off the books for 2019. Even managed to get some players in return to fill spots next season.

Re: 2017-2018 MLB Hot Stove Thread

                The deal is money neutral:

                Kazmir- 17.67 M in 2018
                McCarthy- 11.5 M in 2018
                Gonzalez- 22.36 M in 2018
Culberson- 500K-ish pre-arbitration salary in 2018, then arbitration eligible afterwards

Total: 52.03 M in 2018, nothing in 2019. 4.5 M is going to the Braves, which drops it down to 47.53 M added money for the Braves.

                Kemp- 21.75 M in 2018, 21.75 M in 2019

Total: 43.5 M in total money, but split across two years. Dodgers are kicking in 4.5 M, which bumps it up to 48 M.

It gives the Dodgers the opportunity to get below the tax this year, at the cost of adding money next year. This will save them money the next time they go over the tax. The Braves free up payroll next year, and get a pair of interesting veteran arms and a controllable utility piece. Kemp and Gonzalez are a pair of old fogies sure to be released, which opens up spots for Acuna and Bellinger.

This isn't the first time the Braves have made a trade like this. I'm sure everyone here remembers the legendary Chris Johnson for Nick Swisher, Michael Bourn and cash trade. Similarly to the trade above (swapping the Indians in for the Dodgers), the Indians picked up the short term flexibility and the Braves the long term flexibility.

It's a shame that never panned out.

Then again, I still wish they never traded Kimbrel to SD.

After getting time to digest this trade.

Matt Kemp isn't going to play for the Dodgers. He'll be traded or released. he's best suited for an American league team now at this stage of his career. As everyone has stated this was a salary dump on both sides.

Adrian Gonzalez would have been buried on the bench this year and at bats would have been limited. He too is probably an AL guy now, but I wish him the best. he was a class act in LA and he will be missed. Already heard if the Padres don't get Hosmer they'll consider AGone.

This puts us under the Lux. tax and sets us up for the future. Next off season's FA class is stacked and we'll have the money to get multiple top tier free agents. We'll see how it goes.

This also allows us to make a big move still this off season. Weather it be signing Lorenzo Cain. Trading for Cutch. Or even trading for a guy like Yelich or pitchers like Archer, Odorizzi, or Zach Britton. Even an out of nowhere deal.

Looks like the Manny Machado sweepstakes may come down to the White Sox and Diamondbacks if the Orioles do pull the trigger.

Dontsee them getting what they think is a huge get though. Hes going to test FA next offseason and likely signs with the yankees. Baltimore shpuld just trade him there and get the best deal for him which would be from New York

I don't think the Yanks would bother if there was no opportunity to talk extension. Wait until FA, give up no one and start up the money making machine.

Agreed, and on Manny's side, there's very little incentive for him to sign an extension a year away from free agency. Baltimore is screwed.
