I really don't want to give him 7 years, but if that's the only thing that will get him then I guess I'd have to live with it.Boston Red Sox

One has to wonder if Dombrowski will show some balls and say "eff it" if Boras continues to demand the 7 years. At some point you got to stick to your principles. It'll be interesting to see how this all plays out.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

No way I give Hosmer 7 years. Don't buy into that San Diego.

According to Nightengale, the Cubs could be willing to go as high as $110MM over four years to bring back Arrieta.Milwaukee Brewers | Green Bay Packers | North Carolina Tar Heels | Wisconsin BadgersComment

That would be a great deal for both parties, IMO. I think the Cubs need him back, he's very comfortable in Chicago, and I just don't know if anyone is going to risk $200M on him. I really am hoping he re-signs in Chicago...he belongs there."People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. Re: 2017-2018 MLB Hot Stove Thread
Yeah I agree, Chicago is where Arrieta really found himself as a pitcher and he seems to be an intrinsic part of that team and clubhouse. If you're being totally honest as someone interested in the Cubs you'd know that they BOTH need each other. Here's hoping they get something done.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

And while the Cards continue to search 3rd base, I still think that Gyorko is serviceable over there. Gyorko is only 29 and is coming off one of his best years hitting .270ish with 20 homeruns and 67 RBI.
I like the infield of:
1B: Matt Carpenter
2B: Kolten Wong
SS: Paul DeJong
3B: Jedd Gyorko
Then you can fill out the infield with Greg Garcia, Breyvic Valera, Luke Voit, Yario Munoz, Edmundo Sosa.I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I don't think Jake takes that, but I'd be okay with it from the Cubs perspective. A rotation of Lester, Arrieta, Quintana, Hendricks, Chatwood is not too shabby.Comment

Cubs and Cards are showing the most interest in Arrieta.
Cubs are also showing interest in trading for Cole.

Re: 2017-2018 MLB Hot Stove Thread
Whoever it ends up being, it certainly looks like the Cubs have many irons in the fire for a T.O.R. type of starter. They've been linked to Darvish, Cobb, Arrieta, Archer, Salazar, and now Cole. Cobb doesn't really belong in that group.
Bruce Levine also mentions Christian Yelich and Lorenzo Cain as names the Cubs might be interested in.
A really good SP, a high OBP/leadoff hitter type, and another RP/CP would pretty much be a complete shopping list at this point. I don't want to get greedy and suggest trading away Jason Heyward or anything.Chicago Cubs | Chicago Bulls | Green Bay Packers | Michigan WolverinesComment
