Angels ink Cuban IF-OF Morales to six-year deal

ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) - Kendry Morales' dream of playing in the major leagues is almost a reality.

The 21-year-old Cuban defector signed a six-year contract on Wednesday with the Anaheim Angels, general manager Bill Stoneman announced.

Currently in the Dominican Republic, Morales defected from his homeland in June. His contract is conditional on his receiving clearance to enter into an agreement with the Angels from the U.S Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control.

A switch-hitter who plays the outfield and first and third base, Morales hit .391 with nine home runs and 42 RBI for the Cuban national champion Industrialists in 2003. He also played first and hit cleanup for Cuba in the World Cup tournament in Havana, belting a grand slam to help lift his club past Taiwan, 6-3, in the finals.
