What all the hype for........
Pavano, he isn't that great at all, I don't know why teams have been sweating him so hard . Granted he had a great season last year, but beyond that he sucks, He been in the big for 7 years and his career record is 57w-58L with a ERA of 4.21. Now thats not that good in my eyes. Pavano is 28 or going to be 29, that still doesn't mean he's going to be great. I just don't see the hype around him. He had 2 winning season out of 7 years, wow that's great....please people wake up. Pavano has some great stuff but there no guarrantee that he will be any better then what he is now.Last edited by RoyalBoyle78; 12-10-2004, 09:15 AM.N.Y Mets

Re: What all the hype for........
While I agree the hype may be a bit much I can still see why teams are very interested in him. Pitchers' best years are 28-32 and he's just reaching his peak. He has also shown flashes of brilliance in his career so it's not completely unrealistic to think he'll turn out well.
Remember this, Dave Stewart was very much like Pavano in that people saw potential in him but his numbers didn't warrant it. As we all know Stewart became one of the more dominant pitchers when he went to Oakland. The same can happen to Pavano.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: What all the hype for........
You also have to take into account that Pavano has played on some pretty bad teams. His career winning % is .496 while the winning % of the teams he's been on is .459.
Also, there is not much good pitching available in free agency right now. Teams realize you need a good starting staff to win, which is why a team like the Red Sox will dish out a decent salary for him to be their 3rd starter.Comment

Re: What all the hype for........
You also have to realize that in Pavano's one good year, he pitched in probably the worst division in baseball last year. He also pitched in a pitcher's park. He is likely headed to the AL East (Sox, Yanks, or O's), and will be pitching in one of the best divisions and in a hitters park. I still think he will be pretty good, but he won't duplicate the year he had last year. Is he worth 4 yrs at 10 mil per? No, but Benson, Jaret Wright, and Leiber are not worth what they received either. Thank the Mets for driving up the price in the pitching market (Benson was way overpaid).Comment

Re: What all the hype for........
Winning percentage is one of the least important stats when evaluating a pitcher's "worth".
Now is Pavano worth what he is going to get? Nope. But are any of the starting pitchers that have been signed worth their contracts? I don't think so.
Edit: Just noticed I said pretty much the same thing as Drag.Last edited by Birdsonbat; 12-10-2004, 12:15 PM.Comment

Thank the Mets nothing......If the Yankees do what people are saying they may do, is go with a $250M payroll by adding the likes of Beltran, Pavano, and maybe a new firstbaseman like Delgado.....That's an average of $10M per player on the 25 man squad....There are teams out there that can't afford one $10M player.Comment
