D-Backs reportedly going after Ortiz for big $$

I hear that the D-Backs may have a 4 year $34 million deal for Russ Ortiz. What is going on with them? I thought they had no money. Now, they're talking about spending $70 million on Glaus and Ortiz? Ortiz isn't worth that much either. Without much offense behind him, he is going to have a rough time.

Geez it looks like Colangelos has suddenly found money. This kinda spending is coming from a team that nearly folded due to financial troubles? Sheesh. I think that Ortiz is a bit of an overrated pitcher and while he can eat up innings I don't think he'll find much success if he goes to AZ.

I agree. I've never been impressed with Russ Ortiz. His BB/K/IP ratio is terrible. If ARZ gives him that type of money, they're crazy. He's definately not worth it IMO.

This is such a brilliant decision by the DBacks "braintrust" [sarcasm]. Hey let's get in more debt and overpay for a mediocre pitcher. If they do this, in one year (or less) they will be looking to dump his rediculous salary because they can't afford him.

I've been more impressed with Russ' hitting, believe it or not.

I agree where the heck are they getting this money from. Gammons says this:
What no one can figure out is where the Diamondbacks, who have begged MLB to forgive their $80 million debt and owe $55 million in deferrals this season because they never funded the deferred contracts, are getting the cash.

WTF, they are scammers. Not that I care Russ Ortiz sucks and is only good behind a good offense, its just weird.

Some of the D-Back owners must be dealing large amounts of drugs on the side or doing some insider trading because this team was saying last year how they're in a huge financial hole.

Glaus was vastly overpaid and the rumoured Ortiz (who's a number 3 pitcher in my books) deal makes me wanna puke.

I better not hear from the D-Back brass next season on how they have some bad contracts and financial problems............
