Kolb traded to the Braves, Smoltz back in the rotation

Something tells me Kolb won't match what he did last season.

    Nice trade by the Brewers.

I'm not as high on Capellan as some are. I put Dan Meyer and Kyle Davies ahead of him among Braves pitching prospects.

But, the fact is he's perceived as the Braves "#1 Pitching Prospect". And I don't understand why Schuerholz would trade a guy with that kind of value for Danny Kolb.

Kolb's a good pitcher, and I think he'll probably be even better under Mazzone. But I cannot agree with giving up Capellan for him. Might be time to give Schuerholz his gold watch and send him to the retirement home.

As far as Smoltz is concerned, I guess I'm okay with him starting again. He obviously wants to. Just hope he can stay reasonably healthy.

We all knew Smoltz would eventually work his way back into the rotation. He's nasty, and will do good as long as his stamina holds up..

I love Doug Melvin. What an awesome trade for the Crew.

By the way, 2005 is the final year of John Smoltz' contract. There's a clause in the deal that calls for him to receive $100,000 per start, on top of his guaranteed $12 million.

Speculation is that the Braves and Smoltz will re-work his contract, adding a year(s) and subtracting that clause. I assume the average yearly salary would be lower, too.

Could give the Braves a little bit more financial flexibility.

Great move for Brewers?? Give me a break capellan might be the top prospect but he sure isnt pitching like one in winter ball.Great move for the braves replacing an allstar closer with an allstar closer cant complain about that.If smoltz can stay healthy and be as dominate as his previous years as a starter its exactly what the braves need that dominiate number 1 every 5 days. Not to mention if we can add alou to the lineup,or maybe do somethin with Giles.Green filled the role nice last year while giles was injuried and would be able to get something pretty good in return for a player like giles.

I dont think Giles is going anywhere. Bobby Cox has been quoted that he doesnt want him moved.

I think as long as Kolb stays healthy, this is a great trade for the Braves. Capellan is expendable due to the wealth of pitching talent Atlanta has.

I disagree. I think this is smart move, and that Schuerholtz will once again prove to be the smarter GM in this trade. Capellan has shown that he is pretty much a two-pitch guy. He throws a straight line fastball, that while extremely fast, has no movement whatsoever. He also throws a curveball, but for the last six months, it hasn't had much movement on it. Atlanta only deals young pitchers when they are supremely confident that they are not going to be successful. So far, we've only been burned once (maybe twice) and there have been countless trades of Atlanta giving up pitching prospects.

Also, rumor has it that Atlanta is close to inking Kevin Millwood.

You can't tell me that a rotation of Smoltz/Hampton/Millwood/Thomson/Ramirez isn't going to be extremely good.
