That was honestly around the figures I was expecting to see for Harper. I said $30-$35 million per year was probably going to be the range for a team signing him. I also figured the years would be between 8-10.

I didn't think a 5 year deal would be what Harper is wanting or looking for. I just knew it would be a longer term deal & I also thought that a price in the $40 million per year range wasn't out of the question.

To me, I think at least 4-5 teams will be seriously trying to get Harper on board with that 10 year/$350 price range. I really don't see a favorite right now in terms of a team signing him. It could be a number of teams really. I do think he has a good chance of remaining in the NL though.

I have this crazy feeling we may see Harper in a situation like JD Martinez was in this year. I realize this is highly unlikely because he's young, but with his character and the baseball owner's unwillingness to open the wallets, it may happen.

On the flip side, Sportrac has his market value set at 10yrs/31M per: https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/washingt.../market-value/. You know who else got a 10 yr deal worth ~30mil per year???? Miguel Cabrera. How's that working out? And remember, Miggy was a consistently great hitter prior to signing that deal. Mr. Harper, is not.

The Cabrera thing isn't a good comparison. Miggy was 31 when they signed him to that deal...Harper is entering his age 26 season. I would have no problem signing Harper to a 10 year deal (although I hate deals like that) as I think he'll be productive for the next 10 years, but I honestly don't know that he's worth the money he's asking for. If he was willing to take 10 years at $250M, I'd be all about it, but that's about as high as I'd go.

Why would you even sign him for that? All the evidence points against giving contracts of over $100-million. I'll give you the Pujols contract in St. Louis and the early 2000s ARod contract. All of the rest were waste.

Scherzer, Trout, Lester all come to mind immediately as $100M+ contracts that have worked out

Good point, I guess I was thinking $100M contracts that have been completed. Regarding the 3 you named though, only one has lead his team to a title. I'm not taking anything away from Max or Trout (they're both the best at their position imo), but its hard to swallow an $100M+ contract that doesn't net you a ring...or even close for those two.

Check this out: https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/rankings/2017/average/. How many world series winners in the top 10? Two...and the Verlander contract wasn't orchestrated by Houston.

You're right that the Cabrera deal was worth ~$30 million per but it wasn't actually 10 years. It was 8 years(2016-2023)/$248 million. No big deal but it was 2 years less(10 only if you include the 2 year team options). Cabrera hasn't been able to stay completely healthy though the past 3 season since signing that deal.

I'm sure he would have been putting up pretty big numbers if healthy. I don't know about MVP type numbers but good numbers especially for the Tigers team that he's on.

What exactly do you mean by "his character"? Nothing he has done or the way he has conducted himself suggest his character should be impugned.

Until Dave Martinez became the manager, Bryce Harper was vocal about his disappointment with his spot in the lineup, position on the field, and more. Washington Post wrote a number of articles on the issue.
