Re: Jay Payton Traded to Red Sox
The Padres are going to be incredibly mediocre next year unless they make what would amount to a HUGE acquisition in the next 8 weeks.
Disappointing. -

Re: Jay Payton Traded to Red Sox
Roberts will be a nice addition to the Padres lineup, he's a good leadoff hitter, has great speed and will cover a lot of ground in the OF.
I don't think Towers overpaid to get him, Payton was a disappointment for San Diego last year, and the signings of Geoff Blum and Eric Young signaled that Vazquez was not coming back anyway.
Roberts was huge for the Red Sox in the post-season and i'm sorry to see him go.Comment

Re: Jay Payton Traded to Red Sox
I'd rather have Dave Roberts than Jay Payton in CF. Even if Payton can cover CF, can he steal bases? Heck, Payton couldn't even hit one out of Petco. He was supposed to be productive but he only came through in September. It sucks to see Ramon leave, but the guy can't do well as a bench player, he has to have some consistant playing time to amount to anything (thus leading to why he came up strong late last season). As for the minor league pitcher... I have no clue who the heck he is, but here's where Towers managed to mess up. Why the heck do you send money to Boston when they've got twice the payroll you have? 2.35 million? You could've added that to the offer for David Wells a month ago or something instead of waiting for bigger market teams to jump in.
KT is content with "contending", with only a winning record. Moores is fiscally responsible. What does that equate to? Third Place in the division at best.
Man, everyday my expectations go down with this team. They're still penny-pinching, they sign mediocre players in front of their "top priority". They give up too much in trades. So far they have done nothing to keep me interested in the team.
To wrap up an unusual long post, this is much better than the Eric Byrnes/Chad Bradford and Preston Wilson rumors. Payton and Linebrink/Aki for Byrnes and Bradford? Yuck, they could've traded Linebrink or Aki for Finley last year.
Oh well, as long as the Chargers keep winning, I could careless about the Padres and their force fed media crap about how they were the "best team in the division" and how "Better Deals can be had in August".Comment
